New CPU advice needed

Another tech question for you guys-
I'm looking to buy a new MB and CPU since my O/Ced 166 isn't cutting it anymore. Problem is, I'm on a fairly tight budget, and a PII is pretty much out of reach. I can get a good deal on an FIC MB and an AMD K6-300 w/ 3dNow.
Question is, will this CPU be compatible with GPL, N2, and the like? I can get a 233 Intel for about the same price, but would like the 300.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you considered the new Celeron 300A overclocked to 450MHz on a Abit BH6 motherboard. It is running at the speed of a PentiumII 450 at a much lower price. I'm gettting one myself in a few days.

What, precisely, is the difference between a Celeron and a PII?

> What, precisely, is the difference between a Celeron and a PII?

The first generation of Celeron is a PII with no on-board cache.  Their
performance was good but not quite the PII level.

The second generation (Mendecino?) have on-chip cache.  The cache is
half the size of PII but it is on-chip so it runs at twice the speed of
a PII's.  Their performance is equal to a PII at same speed.

First generation Celeron: 266, 300
Second: 300A, 333

Definitely the Celeron 300 with Epox BXA motherboard works great.  The only problem is there is no warranty for such a combination but it works great running at the 100mhz bus to achieve 450mhz.

If the 300A works at 300 MHz when I get it, I will overclock it to 450 MHz, and take the risk. My impression is that very few peocessors from Intel breaks down. It will probably be dragged to the recycle bin in a couple of years for an early retirement anyway :-)
