GPL CPU Patch Question

by BRH » Wed, 24 Oct 2001 10:55:44

I'm thinking of upgrading my Celeron 566 (o/ced to 850) to either a
Celeron 1.1 or Pentium III 1.1, and recall something awhile back about a
patch to allow GPL to run with a high-speed CPU.

1.  Would that patch be necessary with either of these CPU's? and,
2.  Is its really a worthwhile CPU upgrade?

I run most popular sims, but GPL most of the time.  The reason that I'm
thinking of doing a relatively cheap upgrade at this time is to run F1
2001 smoother.  (I have a V5 videocard, which I want to keep using...)

Thanks.

I think it was chip speeds approaching 1.3 or 1.4 ghz and above.  You
'should' be ok..  :)

I have a 1.333 AMD and the patch was not necessary.

GPL CPU Patch Question

I have a 1.4 ghz tbird and no probs.

But I'd suggest you won't get the boost you want from a celeron. The
Duron 1 ghz slaughters it by 15-20% or more. If you're looking at a p3
1.1ghz, you'll need a new mobo anyway, so the AMD solution gives you
more power.

incredible (even on my lowly V3 3000). Full fields at Monaco, no
slowdowns at 1024, and alllllmmmost there at the start in 1280, 36fps
solid once moving.

Racing sims alway demand a lot of CPU over other 3d games, so go for a
bit more than you think, you'll appreciate it later.

1. It shouldn't be needed for either of those, it's for 1.4/1.5 plus
(I think), but the patch does switch off the requirement to load the
CD.
2. GPL apparently likes meaty CPUs so PIII would be a better option
IMO

No, the K7s have better FP perf, which is what GPL likes.

Thanks for those tips, but I want to keep my current motherboard - an ABIT
BH-6.  So, I don't think that the Duron is an option, unfortunately.

If you want to keep your mobo, the new P3s are not an option as they
have a new interface. The older, non-tualatin p3s will fit fine, as
will all celerys.
