GPL "High Speed CPU" Patch?

by Tom Pabs » Sat, 26 May 2001 02:01:28

Could someone please post some "details" on this topic....I'm tired of
clicking through 10,000 "thank you's"......looking for some details on what
the heck this patch addresses....and "why/when/how its needed."

I've not been running GPL for a few months....but will be installing it
again shortly.

Thanks in advance, for your information.

GPL "High Speed CPU" Patch?

Hi Tom,

The patch is an unsupported beta patch which will update Grand Prix Legends
1.2 so that it will run properly on 1.7Ghz and higher machines. Download the
file from Papyrus' website at http://www.papy.com/html/new.htm.

GPL "High Speed CPU" Patch?

That'll be in the first message in the thread, from Eric Busch of Papyrus...

"An unsupported beta patch is now available that addresses the CPU speed
detection problems in Grand Prix Legends when run on 1.7+ GHz machines.  The
patch comes in 6 flavors (one for each of the country specific versions of
GPL), so be sure to download the appropriate version.

* Note that you will need to have the 1.2 patch installed before applying
this patch.

GPL "High Speed CPU" Patch?

by Tom Pabs » Sat, 26 May 2001 02:41:57

Thanks Ken....and thanks, Tony.  However, I can read....and you posted
"repeated" information.

I would like to know the details of the reasons behind this patch....why its
needed and how it works.....and what caused the "problem" (yet to be
defined) in the first place.

I learned quite some time ago.....DO NOT INSTALL "patches" on your computer
because someone else thinks you need it.

Regards,

Tom

PS:  And how many people could possibly be running systems with a 1.7 Ghz
CPU......it would have to be an Intel chip....and there aren't that many of
those around (or people stupid enough to buy them....since they are slower
than an AMD 1.2 Ghz...for $190 bucks!)?  I am encouraged that Papyrus is
helping.....what, maybe 15 or 16 people on this planet!  That's great news!
But, "Could you guys get back to work on N4......or the CART
sim.....please?"

GPL "High Speed CPU" Patch?

by SpeedFree » Sat, 26 May 2001 02:51:39

I think it goes something like this.

When GPL was written, I think a P166 was the standard cpu.
Papy designed the timing system inside GPL based on cpu
speed. People started noticing that GPL was acting strangely,
running at twice the speed, or crashing when used on PCs
with cpus running at over 1400mhz. I think the actual figure
where GPL stopped working properly is around 1415mhz.
It is something to do with the 32 bit integers that GPL uses.
When involved in calculations using these fast processors,
they were "overflowing" and causing problems.

So this new patch fiddles with the gpl.exe in quite a few places,
to change the code. I think GPL will now work at speeds up to
around 2800mhz, at least thats what people were saying in
VROC last night.

Gary Hoorn has installed it successfully on his P4 1.7ghz, and
Dan Leach tested it on a P3 960 (!!), just to see if it worked,
and it did.

Tom, you're coming across as fairly aggressive,
you seem to have some unresolved anger...  :-)
Or is that just the result of too many coffees today?  :-P

GPL "High Speed CPU" Patch?

My understanding is that its for high speed CPUs. Not exactly sure were the
break point is but I think its around the 1.5 mark, but maybe 1.4. Its
mostly the P4s with the problem. So unless you have a brand new screamer of
a system I don't think you need it.

Hope that helps

The future, Tom, the future. In the future people running gpl on faster
cpu's will need it. In the future there will be more than 15 or 16
people who need the patch.

Yes I agree.

I'm guessing here, but maybe this speed patch was made in someone's own
free time, just like the D3Dpatch was...anyone know? But whatever, I'm
grateful for it! And I'm sure all the folks at papy are still working
away at N4 and a new CART sim just for you :0/.

BTW, have you had a bad day?;)

Everyone in 2 years time. Where did you get the impression people are going
to stop using GPL any time soon?

Tom,

This information which is as you say "exactly what I was looking for" is
repeated information in this newsgroup.

Next time be clear about what you do, and do not want repeated :)

GPL "High Speed CPU" Patch?

by Tom Pabs » Sat, 26 May 2001 14:15:57

Oh, come on Mike.  You know as well as I that, but for a few in this
community....visiting RAS much more than once or twice a weeks is about max.
How many thousands of posts are made within a week?  I went back 5 or 6
days....couldn't find anything about the "reasons for the patch"...so I
asked the question again.  I don't think I was out of line in so doing.  Do
you really think I was.....or is there something else that was bugging you?

Regarding my "reply" to Ken Verburg......Ken is probably the best friend I
have within this sim community....he will probably vouch for that as well.
You guys are reading too much into my choice of words....maybe not the best,
I admit.  But, I've just returned from a week in LA for E3...and have less
than 10-days before leaving for London for another week......and with the
Winston Cup guys coming in less than a month (and just days after I return
from London)....I'm a bit swamped right now....so my email and posts are
short (except for this one....lol...).

Besides all this, I'm very frustrated....not just for me, but for this
entire sim community....that the GF3 release has essentially been a
"non-event" for sim racing.  That's disappointing....for many, many
reasons......not all of which are very public right at the moment.

"My apologies" to anyone offended by my remarks or posts........including
you, Mike.

Regards,

Tom

Geeze ***y Christ it seems so hard to please you.  You want your McFlurry
served on a golden plate hmm???

Why do you need to know everything about it?  It's a patch, it fixes a bug.
It's all written in the post you replied to. End of story.  It's none of
your business to know "why" this bug was in GPL.
