Rendition Ready Cards.

by Shane Lans » Sat, 08 Feb 1997 04:00:00

Hi There,
I have a question about the Rendition cards (Screamin
3D, 3D-Blaster etc).
I went to the sierra site to look at the 3d card and it said that you
needed a min dx2-66 and win95 etc. It gave me the impresion that the
rendition games only work in win-95 and not dos. I have a P-133 Win95
etc but Dos is much faster with Nascar GP2 etc and still wish to get
that little bit extra by still running in dos. Is it possible to still
run the rendition versions in dos..?

They work fine in DOS.  The Sierra site says it requires Win95 only
because they do not have Win3.1 or NT drivers.

My Intergraph reactor (now intense) did not have DOS, Win3.1, or NT
utilities either.

You know how some boards come with a utility to setup the card for
IRQ, I/O address, DMA channel, default resolution, etc.???  Well the
Intergraph Reactor (now intense) does not come with any such utility.

If your goal is to setup a DOS game machine, you cannot do it quickly
with this card.  You MUST install Win'95 and setup the Intergraph
reactor (now intense) using this operating system as it's config
utility.  Then you could "not use" Win'95 any more and have your game
machine.

In my opinion, the Win'95 hoop is a high one to make someone jump
through just to get a killer game machine setup for ICR2 and Nascar2
using a verite 1000 based video board  (DOS games).

Someone please tell me that one of the other verite 1000 based video
boards comes with a simple little DOS utility to setup the card.  I'll
manage my own IRQ's in this case...

True, but DOS is dying a slow death.  Win95, while by no means perfect,
is poised to take over as the *** OS of choice.  This is evident by
many companies finally starting to make their 'killer' games Win95
only.  Diablo immediately comes to mind, as do other upcoming titles
like JediKnight, X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter, and Unreal (all must have
games for may people).  It's really a shame that N2 was not made as a
Win95 app.

G,day Shane & all
Absolutely! I have a p166-3dblaster and run the accelerated versions of
nascar2 & Icr2 by booting out to Dos from Win95.Its a great card for
running svga 640 x 480 dos games IMHO.Win95 performance was fairly ordinary
when I bought it, however the latest Creative drivers have definitely
improved the situation.I'm playing GP2 with all textures except mirrors on
low detail setting at a great frame rate.
This maybe slightly off topic but hopefully interesting.Like most
folk,I've been highly sceptical of WIN95 as a true games platform, but
after loading up my mate's game Hyperblade and seeing it running under
Direct3D,the future's look'in rosy for us simracers!

Download the Win 3.1 drivers from Creatives site they work fine with
the Intergraph card and probably with Sierra's also. I know as I have
done this. I would not recommend as cross flashing the Bios between
cards, In fact I think that all of the post on their site NOT to try
that although it is being done. If you want Win 3.1 drivers this is
about all you can do. I have both the Intergraph and  the Creative 3d
Blaster PCI , and the ONLY advantage to the Intergraph is the fact you
get ICR2 for the Rendition but even then it is not all the tracks were
remade for the Verite. I say the Creative came with better drivers and
the Bios update's have been as good or better than Intergraph. Having
both I do not think that Intergraphs support was any big deal as some
people here rave about. And now with  the price up on the Intergraph
and the shipping charges just wait until the Creative goes on sale
like mine did at Best Buy awhile back at $179 and now they are equal
on price.
In short BUY what you want or is easier to get as they are all more or
less they same card anyway!

Actually, Creative's drivers are the slowest of all the cards.  They
are even slower then the Rendition reference drivers that Intergraph is
distributing.
