...like so:

Design a track for GPL so that the start line is 1/4 of the way around
the track, and the finish line is 1/2 of the way around. The rest is
just a basic track - shape unimportant.

Get out of pits, cross s/f line, drive to *just* before 1/4 mark. Take
off from there, and fly over 1/2 mark. Cruise back over s/f line, and
record lap.

Load GPL Replay Analyser, and check 1/4 and 1/2 splits. Calculate
difference - there's my hill time!

All I have to do now is work out how to do the track. When I can't even
get a basic oval working, even with the tutorial. Damn, knew there was
a problem... :-)

That's cool. I think a lot of people can relate to that. I'd love to do it
as my dad races in several hillclimbs since it's extremely cheap and fun.
Too bad there are no sports cars...

Thanks,
Alex

How about the road from Batesmans Bay up the coast towards Canberra in
Australia. I know this road really well and think it would make an
interesting real life hill climb.

ISTR that someone is doing a version of Pike's Peak for GPL - the
ultimate hill climb!

Of course if you're looking for a challenge you could do the epic
Grossglockner pass mountain climb used in the 30's.

Oh, man, you mean I could do Pike's Peak? Now that would be totally
cool....

No, as anybody who's ever read Hunter Thompson knows (or who's been there),
the World's Greatest Hillclimb is the run from Hilo up to the crater of
Mauna Kea...only the way ol' Hunter did it, of course, he raced *down* the
13,784-ft. mountain in a Ferrari 355.  Pike's is 325 ft. higher, of course,
but you don't start from SEA LEVEL!  :-)

Clarification: I mean a *proper* hillclimb, one where one mistake
costing 0.1s wrecks the whole thing. I consider anything over a mile to
be a pale imitation... :-)

How could you do a prodominately dirt hillclimb in GPL?

Thanks,
Alex

BTW, there's tons of SCCA Solo I hillclimbs around, especially here in PA,
we have about 4 of them within a 2 hours drive

David,

Have you considered drag racing?  Some strips run slightly uphill.  After
all, a mere 440 yards....  <BG>

says...

I believe when you are track building you can specify the surface. e.g.
tarmac, concrete, grass, dirt, etc.

However... making a Pike's Peak track dirt surfaced and then trying to
get a GPL car up it would be an exercise in extreme patience that would
make Monaco look easy!

I'd love to do it - but as I said, I can't even get a basic oval
working yet, even with the tutorial website. I guess I'm just thick :-)

You just gave some GPL track editor one helluva project!
