I've not been following this thread, but can't resist noting that if you
discount Pikes' Peak out west and Mt Washington on the east coast (both
well over a mile) than you are really missing out on some amazing hills.

Certainly. I'm not discounting them as such... it's just that my
primary interest is in British-style climbing - what you might call
"sprint hillclimbing". The two are wholly different experiences - like
comparing a 1/4-mile dirt oval with Indianapolis.
