Catalyst 3.2 drivers out! various n2003 fixes!

I am extremely interested in how these work with NR2003, especially at the
Road Courses which, if I understand correctly, has been somewhat of an issue
with the Radeon's.

I am seriously considering getting an ATI 9800 Pro, but I want to be sure it
works _flawlessly_ before I do.

I was holding out for the nVidia FX Card, but after a year of prodding us
along they delivered an under-whelming card and I'm pissed at them for that.

So be it.  My money is as good to ATI as it is nVidia.

Actually only listed fixes were with the beta not the final release.
Drivers do work fine however for me on the 8500.

How does the 8500 handle N2003? I never owned a NASCAR game, but I am
seriously thinking of picking this one up, but I have reservations as to how
my system (Epox 8KHA+, AMD 1700+, 512 megs ram and 8500 retail) would handle
this game. Since my system runs everything else that I play (Morrowind, BG2,
GPL, F1 2002 and mods, Dues Ex) without problems (i.e. good enough FPS), I
have no intentions of upgrading for quite a while. Also, since I'm not a big
enough NASCAR fan, I don't want to go out and upgrade my system for this
game.

At last I can now race the road circuits thanks to the new drivers, how it
was released in the first place with this problem is beyond me

I have a 1600+ with 8500 and it runs it fine, about the sane FPS as with
NR2002 with slightly better graphics settings.
No complaints at all with it.

Catalyst 3.2 drivers out! various n2003 fixes!

by Bill Anderso » Sun, 16 Mar 2003 09:50:31

I had been using Catalyst 3.0a and OpenGL with Nascar 2003. D3D looks like
***IMO with Nascar 2003 and Catalyst 3.0a. I would usually use 1024x768 in
OGL with the slider bar cranked all the way to the right in the control
panel for highest quality (2xAA & 16xAF) and with the vsync turned down one
tick (default off). I could also get away with using 1600x1200 in OGL with
no AA and 8xAF and vsync set to default off. I found that the 1024x768
setting played a little faster, and during online game play, the difference
between the two settings visual quality is not that noticeable. Jaggies are
a major problem in Nascar 2003 on poles and around the wall tops in the
distance.

Catalyst 3.1 broke the 3D setup in both Nascar 2002 and 2003.

I installed Catalyst 3.2 and here is what I found:

3D setup now works again! ;-)

OpenGL does not look as good as it used to with Catalyst 3.0a and I took
about a 15-20fps hit ;(

D3D now plays much faster and looks better than before. 1024x768 with 2xAA
and 16AF in D3D does not look that good. The AA in D3D looks like ***
compared to the OGL version. Even at 1600x1200 w/oAA, you still see crawlies
on the horizontal painted lines in D3D.

1600x1200 in D3D with noAA and 16xAF plays very fast and smooth. This is the
setting I finally decided on using with Catalyst 3.2.

So Catalyst 3.2 fixes the 3D setup in Nascar 2003, but OpenGL performance is
slower than Catalyst 3.0a. Using Catalyst 3.1 is not an option if you play
Nascar 2002 or 2003.

I don't know if I will keep Catalyst 3.2 and use D3D at 1600x1200/noAA/16xAF
or switch back to Catalyst 3.0a and use OpenGL at 1024x768/2xAA/16xAF. I am
really considering going back to Catalyst 3.0a and OGL because jaggies
seemed less noticeable then, even at 1024x768 wAA as apposed to 1600x1200
w/oAA.

My setup:
MSI K7T Turbo2
512MB PC133 Crucial
Radeon 8500LE 250/275 (stock speed)
DX9
Win98SE
SB Live! Value

I dual boot Win98SE and WinXP. I have yet to even install Nascar 2003 in
WinXP. I got slightly better frame rates with Nascar 2002 in Win98SE over
WinXP so I have been sticking to Win98SE for games (for now).

Display Properties-> Settings -> Advanced -> OpenGL tab or Direct 3D tab...
Its the first item under Custom Settings heading.

"Flawless" ain't a word in ATI's lexicon...but the 3.2s do specifically
address a bunch of N2003 issues (including the demo).

Thx, Roger.

You can also get the 3.2s from 3DGuru w/o needing to register:

The 3.2 has little performance boost for the 9700. ATI had hoped to include
these performance enhancements, but they will have to wait for 3.3. See the
Rage 3D site for info. The 3.2 is working fine for me in all games. P4 1.6a,
Asus P4B, AIW 9700

I did the 3.3 hack that is out (the card is now reported as a 9800 and
uses the 3.3 code) and it does work, about a 5-10% 3dmark boost in the pixel
shader tests.

Thanks Bill,  I thought that had something to do with streaming video or
something.

BTW, are you the same guy that used to set us up with decal sheets in n2
and n99?

thanks again,

rob
