Later/latest Catalyst drivers breaking GPL using D3D

by loose ether via GamesKB.co » Mon, 11 Apr 2005 21:03:02

I have a Gigabyte 128Meg 9200 using Catalyst 4.4 drivers, 2D Version
6.14.10.6436 and run GPL 1.2.0.2 with the D3D driver under Win XP pro SP2.
It runs awesomely and very stable (apart from the occasional flicker in the
menus - which is not uncommon for GPL).
My problem is when I install ANY later ATI drivers, GPL breaks.
It still runs but all I get to see is a small window in the upper-left of
the screen. The rest of the screen is black but the game is obviously
running. I could use the OpenGL driver for GPL but on my system D3D is far

writing this I believe the Catalyst is up to version 5.2 and a number of
other software titles break without these later/latest drivers.
Believe it or not, I'm probably going to install XP pro onto another
partition with Catalyst 4.4 drivers just for GPL, install the latest
Catalyst on my main XP pro partition and dual-boot !!
Has anyone else come across this problem with later Catalyst drivers
running GPL with the D3D driver ?

Had the same problem. Found a solution in the RSC forums

http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=105748

Important excerpt:

With ATI cards, GPL runs as only a small square in the top corner of
the screen
1- Set the line in the core.ini:
 [D3D7]
 DirectMirrorRendering = x equal to 0

Runnig 5.1 now or something like that without problems currently.
