...and then complaining the performance isn't as good as with Glide???  The
only thing that matters is whether a GeForce card can run GPL as fast as a
Voodoo with both cards in their native mode now that the patch is out.  If
so, goodbye Voodoo for racing sims for at least the next while.

Because most people don't honestly understand the issue. That's ok. All they
need is enlightenment.

I don't know about V2 or V3 users, but for those of us with V5's, this
patch brought us a ray of hope. On the V5, 2X FSAA doesn't work at all
in glide, it crashes loading the cars onto the paddock. 4X FSAA works,
and looks fantastic, but there are problems with the menus being
reduced, mouse trails, and a flickering line at the edge of the
display.

None of these problems exist with the D3D patch, and 4X FSAA is even
faster than it is in Glide, but D3D colors aren't as pure and even
when the fps counter is maxed out, the game feels sluggish compared to
glide.

That being said, I'm still hoping for a patch to the glide rasterizer,
to make FSAA work as transparently in GPL as it does in all my other
games.

I'm not complaining, I just noticed that the performance wasn't as
good as with glide. If it was, I'd use D3D, because the mirrors look
better than with Glide and the activated z-Buffer should clear up some
overlap artifacts.

being that the resolution of the mirrors is cranked up probably WHY the D3D
drivers are slower than the Glide which doesn't allow this. Turn off the
high res mirrors and then compare!

Tracey,
I'm running on V5 and don't have the reduced menu problem you mention. Are
you running GPL with the 'Glide.ini' and 'glide2x.dll' files that came in
some kind of patch (George ....)?  It is only when I use that 'patch' that
the menu size problem exists.
I hate the colours in the D3D version, but the mirrors are great!

IMO the D3D patch is worth living with for a while to see if you like it
even on the V3. Because the extra mirror detail is superb, even if it
costs frame rate. The extra detail means (i) higher immersion factor (ii)
more information received in a quick glance... vital in a close battle.

I lurve those mirrors!

PS Just discovered that it's the tosshighestmip setting that causes my v3
to grind to a halt at resolutions over 1024x768. It's obviously texture
memory related. Altering this to 1 gives me my 3dfx-esque frame rate back
at 1280x960 (can race at less now I'm used to it :-) The only obvious
drawback is the***pit (dials) texture looks as rough as Scary Spice on a
bad hair day (every day). The mirrors still look f*cking superb tho :-> I
think I'm sticking with d3d!

Good point, though also with low res mirrors Glide still performs
faster on my PC, especially at the start it can maintain a higher
framerate. Though, for online races the sharper mirrors might be a big
advantage...

I also just found that setting:

TossHighestMip = 1

gives me the same framerates in D3D as Glide with V3 3000 without any
stuttering (with the white dials on all-black dashes).  However, the GPLEA
Ferrari and Lotus dashes work fine (GPLEA Brabham is fine, but***pit sides
are black).

I've found I prefer "cars only" in the mirrors while racing online. All that
detail is distracting and with it shut off I can focus more on the road
ahead instead of trying to pick out a tiny car in my mirrors against all
that eye-candy.
