Best nVidia card for GPL??

by racerda » Fri, 23 Aug 2002 06:25:01

Hey,

XP, my Voodoo 3 3000 card and games don't seem to like each other. It
was cool with 98, but not XP.

GPL and N4 all puke when switching in and out of modes as they start
up.

So I want to go nVidia GeForce, but not sure which one to go with. Any
recommendations with GPL and GeForce? I also don't want to spend a
billion dollars on the thing, so I don't need the latest and greatest.
A GeForce 2, 3 or 4 of some flavor would be fine.

So hit me with your best recommendation for a decent, relatively
inexpensive GeForce card that works for GPL, N4, etc.

Thanks!

Budget-wise, the two best choices are a GF4 Ti4200, or the GF3 Ti200, avoid the 2/4 MX series cards
like the plague since *** is a major concern of yours.

Get an MSI Geforce4 Ti4200.  Mine overclocks to almost 4600 levels with
minimum of fuss :)

I agree, my GF3 Ti200 is overclocked above the Ti500 specs right now and I
use the Omega drivers.  This card is awesome and only cost me $82.

Even an old GeForce 1 works great in GPL. However with a shinny new GeForce
4 you can run at at 1600x1200 with FSAA and it looks simply wonderfull. I
guess it's a question of cost and if you want to run other games. GeForce
4200ti is about the best performance/price at the moment.

You don't mention your Processor, which is important, but...

Since GPL is frame-rate restricted to around 36fps, I think a Ti4200 is
about as far as you would need to go.

But, looking to the future, I'd get an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro :)

Thanks Larry,

Proc is a 1 Ghz PIII.

Looks like it'll be the Ti4200. :-)
