N3 Talladega thoughts and questions

by Jeff Leona » Tue, 11 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hello all
For quite some time now I have been racing online in N3.I stick to
Talladega for the most part as I am not quit up to speed at the shorter
tracks. Usually I will qualify around anywhere from say 15th to 25th. I was
doing qual times of low 49 on the first lap and mid 48's on the
second. After experimenting with a few setups of my own and others  that I
got off the net my qual times have dropped to more like a 48.7 on the first
lap and like a 48.3 or 48.4 on the second.Usually during a race I can drive
smart and avoid trouble and consistantly finish in the top 5 or 10. BUT
what I am trying to figure out is how all the guys that qualify better than
I am are doing sub 48 second laps(in cooler weather).
It seems that no matter what I do I am at least 1/2 to 7/8ths of a second
off of the pole qualifier.I have tried different setups and different lines
and I still end up mid pack when I qualify. I dont know maybe I am missing
something somewhere, and I have compared many replays to try to pick up som
e speed somewhere.
So If any one has a few suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
see you on the track

Jeff

The biggest part of qualifying at Dega is your warmup lap and carrying the
speed into the final lap

Warm up your tires on the very first lap.. then as you go into your first
qaul lap, run the high line while coming down off the the turns and carrying
alot of speed

as you end your first timed lap, you should be up high in turn 3/4, just as
you reach the writing on the wall, start to turn down into the turn so that
you gain speed coming off of the turn and down the frontstretch.

This will give you a little more speed going into your final lap

I usually qual in the top 3

make sure your setup has the car set for pure speed.  Max tape, min spoiler,
etc..
