N3 Online Rookies - My thoughts.

by Dean William » Tue, 02 May 2000 04:00:00

I raced a lot this weekend in the open (non pw) races.  There were a few
guys that were causing a lot of wrecks.  Some of the guys were yelling and
swearing at the guy via chat.  I was behind one of them for quite a few laps
because his driving style made me very nervous to pass.  As I followed, I
notice that he looked like a rookie.  The symptoms were:

- No use of autochat keys
- Could not hold a line in corners
- Slow
- Inconsistant lines and speeds

When drivers would get near him, and attempt to pass, specially in the
corners, there would be a wreck.

After the race in chat, I felt bad for him and I asked him if he was having
a tough time, or was he really trying to wreck people.  Turns out he's new
to N3 and online racing.

I do have a point.  I was new on Hawaii quite a few years ago, and believe
me, some of you pros can be pretty intimidating.  I tried my hardest to not
cause wrecks, but I did cause some, and the intimidation became too much and
I never did Hawaii again.  Now that I have a few years behind me, and I race
quite clean, I like to give guys that are causing wrecks the benifit of the
doubt.  It's hard for the first while to get out of the way.  The new guys
are having a hard enough time driving, so looking down at the keyboard to
say "Sorry" isn't always the easiest thing to do.

A suggestion for the new guys (it definately helped me).  Race offline
against 43 cars in races long enough that you have to pit for fuel, say 35%.
Start at the back, have the AI set to slow enough so that you can work your
way into the top 15 or 10 by the end of the race.  Have Damage set to
Realistic, and practice until you can finish the race without any contact.
It really helped me.

I'm really not trying to come off as a "know it all" because I'm not.  I'm
just kind of "thinking out loud".

Dean,

It would definitely be beneficial for any rookie to spend time
practicing offline against AI cars before going online and
encountering the kind of ripping they will get if they cause
a crash. It is frustrating to get crashed by a rookie, but
some of the things said to them is simply uncalled for.

A lot of these rookies are likely kids, and for someone to use
the kind of language that is used, is simply not necessary.
Anyone that is that serious about racing online shouldn't be in the
public servers - they should be in a league - or hosting a server
that is invite only (password protected) to race against people
that they know are experienced, and can race at the same level.

Rookies are usually e***d and eager to race against others
online, so they usually don't take the time to develop the skills
needed to race against experienced drivers. So when someone
goes into a public server - they should expect that they will
encounter inexperienced drivers, and the kind of stuff that happens
inevitably.

Of course there is the occasional 'psycho driver' who comes in
and thinks the object is to take out as many opponents as you
can - who thinks the skills he learned in Quake and Unreal
Tournament can be applied in auto racing sims : )

I would like to say thanks to Dean for seeking out the guy and
offering advice.  Usually newbies are waaaay over thier heads and can
use all the help they can get.  Just give a chance to get up to
speed, not mph but awarness, and most will do much better.  If you see
a guy whose all over the place, note his name, become a friend, or
mentor.  Even just a few words of encouragement might be all they need.
Point out things that are obvious to pro's but new guys just might be
too overwhelmed to figure them out...Like going slower into the turns so
you can hold your line.
Help em set-up the auto chat key...but hey..if they are new and all
over the place, do we really want to devide thier attention further? :)
Once again, thanks Dean, I hope we all can spare a few moments to help
the helpless.

Well as I am a rookie to N3 i have to say this...

The autochat keys are a distraction, however I don't have a problem
keeping up usually.  I guess once u have them keys memorized its not so
bad +)

Personally I hate any chat feature in online racing, in my experience i
find its just too much of a distraction, but thats just me.

Some very good points there Dean.
Too often I think newer drivers get gunshy after getting cussed out a few
times, and never come back. We experienced online racers I think can go a
long way in just communication with some of these guys and offering them
help.

Using the chat keys to tell people "<-- Pass Low" for example prevents a lot
of accidents.   You might think "Why do I want anyone too pass me?!".  That's
where it gets difficult to explain.  If your not up to speed, sometimes its
better to let a faster car pass than block them.

Well Jason I agree with u, tho I will just move over (when its safe to
do so), i Just won't announce my intentions.  I guess if i could program
my wheel with those commands it would be simple.  But i still hate in
car chat while racing

The problem with not announcing your intentions is that the faster guy will
have to guess which way you're going to move over... thus a better chance a
wreck will occur.

If you really don't like using keystrokes for auto-chat, try Game Commander
out.  I believe they have a demo which you can try for 30 days.

Either way, I would highly recommend getting into the habit of announcing your
intentions (leaving pits, entering pits, pass me low, pass me high, run me
over, hit me again... only harder this time... ;-) )

So what is the autochat key and how do you use it?
I want to make racing a bit more simple...

Auto chat are the ten function keys...in N3  Trouble is, you have to
press cntrl F1 to activate the keys.  If you can program buttons on your
wheel or joystick you can make them activate the autochat keys.
look in your main N3 folder for the listing of the autochat messages.
autochat.txt or something like that, you can edit them as you like as
long as you use a txt editor.
Another method is to use a voice program like Game Commander.  This
allows you to say "tire temps" and the F4 screen comes up or say "pass
Low" and the the proper function key is activated.  This really helps
not only you...but anyone around you as well

Use CTRL-F1 through CTRL-F10 to say the phrase defined in your autochat.ini
file.  It's autochat something anyway, located in the main Nascar3 folder.

Dave,

You can also program in additional phrases by setting up voice
commands that press 't' followed by what you want to send and
finishing with the 'Enter' key. That way, you're not limited to
the ten auto-chat keys.

The only problem I find with that method is the response time.   I doesn't
appear right away like the autochat commands.

Dean,

That's true. In MX, you can set the keystroke duration down to 0
to alleviate that (it's really fast). However, it depends if the
game can "see" keystrokes coming in that fast. Some cannot.

Maybe put critical things on the chat binds while other messages
that don't fit, and aren't often used, can be GC macros.
