N3 Rookie Questions

Hi all

I have played GPL for ages now and think its great, but I fancied trying
this Nascar sim. Being English I do not understand this pace car thing
fully. And I would appreciate if anyone could either give me a rundown of
Nascar rules or direct me to a site which could.

The things I am confused about are
1.    when the pace car comes out does it come out in front of leader or
anywhere?
2     Why does pit lane shut?
3.    after lining up behind pace car there were people then overtaking me
and my spotter telling me to let them through.
4 anything else I have probably missed the point on.
I know these are very basic to someone who knows, but I am really enjoying
the tactical side of this racing and would like to know more.

Thanks Martin

I'll give it a shot....

The pace car comes out and the leader will be the first car that the pace
car "picks" up, i.e. the pace car will pull out in front of the leader after
you have taken the caution

Well, not sure if this is the real reason, but here is my guess.  If you
were at a large track, like Michigan for instance, and you knew that the
caution was coming out and the pace car had just picked up the leader, you
could conceivably hop onto pit road, make your pit stop, and then get back
out on the track before the pace car gets back around to the entrance to the
pits allowing the leaders to pit.  This would give a large advantage to
someone at the back of the pack, allowing them to then pass all the leaders
while they pit since he had already pitted as the pace car picked up the
leaders.  Probably not the right answer, but like I said, that is my guess.

Well, I have found this to be one of the few complaints that I have with the
game, in the fact that with 43 cars to keep track of, sometimes the game
gets a little confused during pit stops and you may get hosed due to a bug.
The rule of thumb in real life is the first car to cross the white line at
the exit of pit lane gets the position.  Also, if the train of cars that did
not pit is still making its way past the pits in real life, the cars exiting
the pits are held by a Nascar Official untill all the cars that remained on
the track have passed.  The spotter may be instructing you to let the people
still on the track by you to simulate this.  Perhaps not, but again, my best
guess.

Hope I helped and didn't confuse you more.

Cheers things are slowly becoming clearer

I do fine in the straight racing but really***up when it comes to pit
stop times and tactics. Also I destroy the r/f tyre, Have to get used to
laying off the entry speed a little I suspect.

Thanks again Martin

Martin, kinny covered it.

pit lane speeds and the pits being closed originated in the 80's when there
were accidents that caused injury (maybe even deaths, i forget)
prior to that, it was a "free for all" (cool to watch on old tapes).

Specifically, a death caused the sanctioning body to implement pit road
speed limits.  I believe it was either 'Dega or Daytona and it was before
the plates...

Hi,
I seem to remember the accident happening at Atlanta in the early
1990s.  If I remeber correctly it was a Bill Elliott crew member or
something.  I remember there was then a pit road speed limit the next
season.  I could be wrong though, I was just starting to get into NASCAR
at the time.

Later,
John

For what it's worth, the only place in Nascar that there is still no pit
road speed limit is in in qualifying for the Winston.  Now that's a blast to
watch live.  They come in there to beat hell, stand on the brakes, and leave
in just as big a hurry.

Only one team at a time though.

Ummm....if you're talking about next year as in 2001, then ESPN2 and
Speedvision will do you no good.

Elliot was driving for Melling (Coor's #9) at the time.  After the crew member
was killed team owner Harry Melling anounced that he was getting out of
NASCAR.....  The rules changed and Melling stayed in.
