Help! DX9 Problem

by Dave » Tue, 21 Jan 2003 07:11:48

Hi:

Based on reports in the newsgroup that N2003 will require DX9, I took
the plunge this afternoon and installed it, and now F1 2002 won't
start.  As soon as I click on the icon, the screen goes blank and then
boots me back to the desktop with a DDHelp error.  I've tried
rebooting many times, and the result is the same.  System info:
Win98, Ti4200, 30.82 drivers.

Luckily, I made a Ghost image before installing DX9, so I restored
back to DX8 and everything works fine again.

One thing I noticed:  usually when I start F1 2002 the right hand
light on my Momo illuminates when the first splash screen comes up.
With DX9, the light doesn't come on.

Something else:  I've nver had any luck getting F1 2002 running with
any drivers above 30.82; I get the same DDHelp error, that's why I've
never upgraded drivers.

Anybody got any suggestions?  If I can't get DX9 to work, does this
mean I won't be able to run N2003?

Thanks,

DP

Help! DX9 Problem

Dave
I have Win98, Ti4200, 41.09 Nvidia drivers (FSAA doesn't work with any of
the MOD's) and DX9 installed without issue.  Is it possible that its your
MOMO wheel causing the conflict? I am still using an old Logitech Formula
Force.

Most likely you are seeing a driver version conflict.  I've been running
drivers in the 40's for some time on a GF3 ti 200 so there is NO reason why
your card also shouldn't work with those drivers.  I would suggest getting
a utility called detonator destroyer and then doing some research on how to
properly remove all traces of Nvidia drivers.  Plus there does seem to be
some conflicts when upgrading from the 30's version of Detonators to the
40's so once again, there is a utility that will address this issue.
3dguru.com might have the info or the Mad Onion site.
finally some ATI users have found old Nvidia registry links even after
totally uninstalling their Nvidia cards.  Follow the correct procedure to
change drivers from the Detonators to a default VGA driver.  Then run the
Destroyer and another util called RegClean to search out any Nvidia regitry
links.  FInally search for any files that start with NV*.* and erase those.
Only then should you attempt to update your drivers to the 40's.
Good luck getting dx9 to work, no matter which version..all the way back
to dx3, there have always been users who have had troubles migrating from
one version to the next.  But never have I heard of it being impossible.

ps...just as an afterthought,  don't leave drivers unzipped in temp
folders.  Once you have installed the drivers, delete the temp folder.
Leaving the extra files on your system could cause some minor conflicts as
well.  The only drivers I keep stored on my HD are all zipped up to prevent
any problems.

Hi Dave:

Thanks a lot for the advice.  I followed your instructions, and now
have the 40.72 drivers and DX9 installed.  F1 2002 now runs, but only
in 16-bit mode (no matter what the resolution).  I thought it may have
something to do with my desktop settings, but it's the same whether my
desktop is set at 16 bit or 32 bit.  But, thanks to your suggestions,
I'm at least able to run F1 2002 again.  Any idea why 32 bit won't
work (it worked okay using DX 8.1 and the 30.82 drivers.

Thanks,

DP

Hi Dave,

There are 2 diff. utils - one called RegClean and one called Reg Cleaner.
I've had the former for years.  Just discovered the latter here on r.a.s.
and judge it *vastly* superior.  The home page is:

Bon chance!

Ok, next question,  It was pointed out to me that Detonator Destroyer is
only for the Win9x's   Is there a version for XP?(see why I still use the
dinosaur??)

DaveP
Don'tcha just wish EVERYTHING would work like it's supposed to?  I
don't know why your 32bit color isn't working.  That is indeed a strange
one.  I think the general rule is always choose a game screen one size
smaller than your desktop..but that isn't really applicable to your
problem, nor do I think it paticularly effective.    At least you got it
running again...maybe somebody else will have some more info..

Dave,

I read recently that Det Destroyer is not necessary for XP since the
uninstall routine cleans up everything including all registry entries.
FWIW, I've never had trouble switching Det. drivers (both new and old since
I've reverted back to 30.82 several times) with XP in the last 15 months of
running XP.

I still haven't made the leap, altho Alison sneers that I can hardly call
myself a professional if I'm still playing with Barney dolls in the nursery.
I was going to buy a store-bought 'puta (Alienware or somesuch) after Xmas,
but my latest HD crash cost me too much time and money.  Besides, I don't
want to make a move until SP2 is out.  Bottom line, no I don't know of a DD
for XP.  Reg Cleaner prolly has enuf info to winkle out most of the debris
left in the corners of the Registry's sardine tin.
