GPL DX9 disaster

by Laurence Wilme » Fri, 17 Jan 2003 09:05:50

Just installed DX9, and now GPL crashes whenever track loads.
Any track.
"GPL caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:6a919e61."

But what's odd is that it does the same if I switch to OpenGL - could it be
something other than DX9 causing it?
(Matrox G400, 1800XP, Abit KX7-333, W98SE)

Thanks,

I'd say it'd have to be a compatibility problem between DX9 and your Matrox
card. I have a Gf4 & DX9 made no noticeable difference to gpl, or anything
else for that matter.

See here for Matrox drivers:

You could try using OpenGL instead if this doesn't work.

Sorry I mis-read your post. Obviously you already tried OpenGL. Could be
your soundcard drivers too.

If you want to remove DX9, there are one or two (non-MS) utilities available
to do this.

Thanks, its a good thought but I am using the latest drivers available - Feb
2002.
And I have tried OpenGL - exact same things happens.
Guess I'll have to fiddle with different older drivers, re-install GPL, then
if several hours of messing about don't work, I'll have to load the Ghost
backup I made before installing DX9.
What is the point of a PC that won't run GPL?)
Answer - Rally Trophy - Yeeha!! - oh, those 'orrible replay views... :-(

I have a G400 in one of my PCs although I haven't tried either gpl or DX9 on
it.
The 2D image quality is superb, but my main PC has a Gf4 4200 (Asus 8420
iirc) and the 2d image quality is good enough. If you can afford it I'm sure
you won't be disappointed. Can't speak for the MX ones though.

OK, I turned down graphic acceleration, changed 1800XP overclock back to
zero, still no change so reloaded my Ghost backup to go back to DX8. Still
the same!
Finally reloaded my GPL CD backup and hooray! I've got GPL back again.
(Will I re-install DX9? Yes, I'll have to, to prove to me that wasn't
actually the cause!).

One track I've added since that backup, and done well on, is Rock Island.
To restore back to where I was, do I just need to copy across the track,
replay and player.ini files?
Thanks,
Laurence
