I got GPL and installed on my system.  Well my system is 2002 stuff and
the GPL CD Rom is 1997/8 vintage with rendition and 3dfx graphics
drivers.   Is that what you need to get good graphics or has some released
a nivida drivers version?

Go here http://www.papy.com/  and get the patches for GPL including the D3D patch, 1.2 patch, CPU patch if your processor is bigger than 1.4 ghz and then enjoy.

My Beginner's Guide at
http://www.racesimcentral.com/guides/gpl/intro/gplintro.shtml tells you all
about setting up D3D and OpenGL for GPL. For another question on the RSC GPL
forum I put together a list of the main downloads to get someone started in
GPL. Here's the list for you:

1. GPL 1.2.0.1 Patch from http://www.papy.com/framesets/downframe.htm

2. GPL CPU Speed fix from same page (very important on new PC's)

3. D3D patch from same page

4. WiHerr's OpenGL patch from
http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49101

5. GPL Carset Manager (GPLCSM) from
http://www.netrevo.com/gplw/newsite/newdefaultjava.asp?GoToThisPage=P...

6. GPLEA cars from http://gplea.racesimcentral.com

7. Add-on tracks listed at http://magnust.d2g.com/

8. 16-bit track updates from
http://www.racesimcentral.com/downloads/gpl/trackadd.shtml

9. Track updates from GPL Today at
http://hem.bredband.net/klafje/gpl_today.htm

10. Program covers from BAPOM at http://www.trilon.com/bapom/

11. JF carset from http://jfcarsets.m4driving.sm to add Cooper, Brabham and
Lotus.

12. Lots of stuff from Bruce's site at
http://www.brucesstuff.speedgeezers.com/

That should be enough to get you started. If you ever need any links go to
Hotgrid's links page at http://hotgrids.racesimcentral.com/

Of course you can always post questions on our GPL forum at
http://forum.racesimcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=36

Hi Don,

the  easiest way to fire up GPL with all its 2002 beauty is to install the
"Complete Update" ... around 56 MB
.
Search the net for "Driving Italia" ... they have the patch on their site.

So ... what to do:

1.Install GPL
2.Install Patch 1.2
3.Install D3D patch
4.Install Complete GFX patch

Youre done ..

Michael

Assuming this isn't a Pabst-like fish for newbies, go to the Sierra
site and download all the patches.  You'll find CPU speed fix, D3D and
OpenGL patches which will allow you to utilise your hardware.

There is a 3rd party OpenGL patch (or whatever the tech term for the
file should be) available that I use and find superior to both the D3D
and OpenGL options supplied by Papy/Sierra.  Can't remember where I
got it, though...

<snip html garbage>

To add to what everyone else has said:

1. Grab GRE, the GPL Race Engineer.  Should be able to find it via
Google, last time I checked it was still on Alison Hine's website.
2. Sign up for a GPLRank account so that you can flex your testicular
muscle.
3. Go to www.vroc.net and follow the instructions for installing and
configuring/patching WinVROC.
4. Get your ass on VROC to enjoy some lag and warp free 28.8kbps
racing and so that we have a newbie to beat up on.

Install it using WinME, then reboot to WinXP, browse to the sierra\gpl\
folder & run gpl.exe. There's nothing critical to the install in the
registry, so it should work just fine. Don't forget to apply the 1.2 patch &
CPU patch, and the d3d or OpenGL patch if you need them.

If you want to install it somewhere else (or twice or something) then just
copy the entire SIERRA folder. Drag the gpl.exe onto your start menu or
desktop to create a shortcut.

i don't have dual boot OS in this system i mentioned. the error occurs
during the later stage of the install procedure. It displays a dialog box
saying "could not install wininet.dll". I run WinXp in a Pentium2 400, 128
RAM,GeForce2 MX400 64MB. I installed all the patches including the CPU fix,
and still the game flicks back to the desktop a few seconds after i run it.
Are you saing that if I install the game in other machine running Win Me,
and then copy the all c:\SIERRA\gpl folder to the Win XP system solves this
trouble? thanks

You don't even have to do that. GPL doesn't need to be installed, just copy
the GPL folder from the CD to where you want it on your hard disk, make sure
all files are not read only and run GPL.exe.

Good point although I've not tried this myself.

Ginja, are you using NTFS by any chance?
