You need to "allow indexing on this folder" for the gpl folder, otherwise
you'll get a CTD (crash to desktop) when you try to start gpl. This may well
be your only problem.

To do this, browse to the gpl folder, right click on it & select properties
& click the advanced button. You'll see a tickbox for indexing, that's very
probably blank. Tick that & try running gpl again.

If you've copied the directory from the CD or another location, you could
uncheck the read only attribute at the same time. Make sure you choose the
option to change all subfolders & files for both of these changes.

as a slight aside, i d/l a very new win 98/geforce driver from nvidia
last night, ran gpl with opengl, and things are much improved,
i.e. opengl didn't work before, and now it runs well, no problems.
v40.something, rather than 30ish which i was using.

i didn't try d3d.

oooh, can i have one?

Install it anyway. It includes the disco patch (to keep a bad online
connection alive) and a no-CD patch too iirc.

It's only essential for CPU's over ~1400Mhz, but there's really no reason
not to install it.

The one and only VROC is all you will ever need again ;-)

Get the software here: http://www.vroc.net/

This will install a viewer (winvroc) for the racelist & chatrooms. Make sure
you apply the IP patch, and fire it up. If it gives an error saying
something about RICHED20.dll, just rename that file (it's in the winvroc
folder) to something else or delete it. Win2k/XP doesn't need it.

Don't forget to check up on racing etiquette & so on. Read the vroc site
fully to appreciate the finer points, but basics include not driving the
wrong way, use your mirrors etc. It may be worth joining a race & just
watching the first couple of times to get the idea. In general it's very
polite & you'll need to be too.

Make sure you have already set up your controllers & player name etc in gpl,
and when you choose a race (one of the green ones to start with) gpl will
launch automatically.

Best of luck to you,

Malc.

Requires a log-in and password to download. I don't read italian so I
cannot figure out whether this is a free signup or not, or even where to
do it. Any further info or other site?

My personal favourite for updating GPL to 2002 with clear and simple
instructions:
