Nvidia 3.53 Detonator driver + GPL = screen flashing problems

by Don Scurlo » Thu, 28 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I installed the new 3.53 Nvidia Detonator drivers and now
in GPL the screen is flashing and breaking up into horizontal
sections,  seems like a vertical sync problem but I can't get around it.
Also bench marking shows a 2 fps loss with the new drivers ?!
The mirrors are still useless.
They seem to work well in all other games I've tried.
Is it possible that the OpenGL patch is incompatible with the
new Nvidia drivers ?
Any ideas or feedback appreciated.

Display Properties > Settings > Advanced... > RIVA TNT >
Additional Properties... > OpenGL Settings > Buffer flipping mode.

If the Buffer flipping mode is set to "Use page flip", you'll get that
flashing effect. "Auto-select" and "Use block transfer" seem to work
for me.

I noticed that too. But despite of the numbers the actual gameplay has
become slightly smoother. There are a wealth of new options in OpenGL
settings, may want to tweak some of those. I particularly liked the
"Default color depth for textures" option. Since GPL's OpenGL renderer
doesn't like 32 bit mode - and that's what I use in Windows - I was
previously forced to adjust color depth before starting GPL. Not anymore.
This option allows OpenGL to use different color depth than Windows
desktop.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of frame rates are you getting?

With a Viper V770, overcooked at 150/183, and a K6-2 350 (old core, 66 FSB,
running at rated for stability) + P5A mobo, and just about every
BIOS/registry/driver tweak I can find, the best I can dish up is a measly
12 fps at 640x480, at Monza. Is my FPU the death knell?

I use my Voodoo 2s for GPL, but I always like to see what nVidia's new
drivers do to GPL. I too saw the flashing sections at 800x600. Strange
thing ism when I changed my racing resolution to 1024x768 the flashing
disappeared with no loss in frame rate. I run my desktop at 16 bit, if
that means anything.
Cheers,
Chris

of factor that K6-2 is, but surely it couldn't account for that big a
difference. What about the mirror refresh rate? In case you haven't tried
it already, set  MirrorsEvery = 8  in the CORE.INI file and see if it
changes anything. Prolly ain't that but can't think of anything else at
the moment.
