HELP! NVIDIA 3.53 DRIVERS DID VERY BAD THINGS TO MY CPU

by Michael Blood Lo » Fri, 10 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I have a new DELL P3 600 with 256 ram, sound blaster live and GeForce card.  I
tried to install the 3.53 drivers to stop the mirror problem and all heck broke
loose.  The drivers wouldnt install and the system (nvidia software install)
said it would reboot and put everything back as it was.  When the system
rebooted I had vga graphics with 16 bit color and no monitor for my hardware.
I had to re-install the monitor and the Geforce drivers, which was no small
feat considering my overmatched computer skills.
The bottom line was, as soon as I got on GPL the sound was atrocious!  It is
garbled and sounds as if the speakers are blown (even though they are fine).  I
just want my sim back the way it was.  I will live with the mirror problem and
just let people pass me at will!  (alright, so thats a lie)
If you have any idea what I can do please let me know.  And please, be very
specific as I am not a pc savant.
Thanks in advance,
Mike Loos

A few people are having success with the new 3.62 drivers, in that they
actually fix the mirrors. I unfortunately had no luck with them and have gone
back to 2.08.  You have been booted back to a standard "VGA" display by the
system and need to reinstall some drivers before you will get your resolution
options back. If you have other programs running properly try reinstalling gpl,
if nothings working properly you probably don't have your drivers installed.

Did you try the fix that was described in the thread 'GPL:
TNT2-Detonator Mirrors not right!'? Matthew Causebrook gave me a
little bit of info that has fixed the mirror problem!

Using the 3.53 drivers and setting the beffer flipping mode to "use
block transfer" (on the OpenGL page of the additional properties
dialogue).

Yes I tried a lot of different combinations of settings and had
short moments when the everything worked well including the mirrors.
But things would quickly get totally corupted and unstable. Things
like all of the text missing from setup screens,  tons of thin horizontal
lines of distortion, flashing screens,  and even at the moments when
everything was working I had a significant frame rate loss.  Would love
to know whats different about my system compared to others but I couldn't
figure it out. I'm back to 2.08 and no mirrors.
