gpl and d3d: how do I make the GeForce work as well as the Thriller?

by (alan » Fri, 04 Aug 2000 04:00:00

A couple of days ago I swapped my Thriller for a GeForce card (ASUS
AGP-V6600 Pro 64) to get be able to run GP3, hoping my GPL would still
run OK.  It does - up to a point....

I'm using a Celeron 300a at 450, and whereas before I got aprox
26-30fps at the start of race with 19 AI drivers, with the d2d patch
its about 20fps.  I can live with that, or improve it by turning some
graphics off.

Of more concern is the lack of "feel" using the d3d patch even when
I'm getting 36fps, and the occasional "stuttering". That is, when I
try to improve my Ring time in training mode (down to 8.50 from
10minutes three weeks ago!) I have a solid 36 fps all round the
circuit.  But since I put the d3d card in I just can't get my braking
right - I feel like I'm floating over the track.  And every 20 seconds
or so the picture seems to have a temprorary stutter - hard to
describe but it reminds me a bit of what sometimes happens when racing
online with a bad connection.

Can anyone recommend what tweaks I need to make to improve GPL with
the d3d? or sites to visit with the info?  I really want to make this
patch work - otherwise I suspect I'll end up putting the Thriller back
in - but I'm not sure if it's possible to have two primary video cards
and swap between them depending on the game.  It would be nice to have
one card that runs both games.

I'm also intending to upgrade to a Celeron 566 overclocked to 833 in
the near future - perhaps this will make the d3d work better.  I'm
interested in hearing from people who have run GPL with both the
Thriller and d3d - did you have the same problems? and can it be
fixed?

Cheers, Alan
