GPL random freezes

Damn frustrating is when gpl suddenly decides to freeze. The screen update
just stops and the sound keeps on looping. This happens not very often, but
too often when it interrupts races.

I have a P3, Win98 and geforce2 mx. I've tried several detonator drivers
from 6.27 to 6.50 and 12.41 (with which the Ring freezed after 100m of
driving). The stablest seemed to be 6.27 or 6.31 as far as I know.. Any
hints on curing this annoyance?

This happens to me occasionally, but only when online racing (VROC)
I have always attributed it to internet latency problems.

IS this happening offline for you?

: This happens to me occasionally, but only when online racing (VROC)
: I have always attributed it to internet latency problems.

: IS this happening offline for you?

I started noticing it while racing online, but it has happened at least two
times while I was racing offline for times.

The version is 1.2. The new d3d patch didn't fix the problem...

Do you overclock your graphics card or CPU? I only seem to have this problem
when oc'ing my Radeon card.

I've not had this happen in GPL but the description you gave "screen update
just stops and the sound keeps on looping" is exactly what I get in Quake3
when I overclock my GF2...... are you sure your graphics card isn't too hot?

I haven't overclocked the cpu or the gfx card. There is no fan on the gfx
card, though. I'll have to test by rigging up some additional cooling
there.

After a lot of frustration and crashing I found www.geforcefaq.com, which
hinted to decrease the AGP aperture size. Initially it was 64, but when I
dropped it down to 16, everything seemed to work again.

AAhh.. I just drove 3 fast laps on the Ring without many mistakes :))

Classic sign of overheating video card. Almost 100% definite that it
is overheating, even if it is default settings. Add the fan and you'll
be laughing. The standard cooling always sucks anyway (cost cutting
eh?)

It wasn't about overheating.. See the later post :)

But before I found that solution, I hooked up two big case fans blowing
towards the heatsink of the gfx board and the cpu. They were very cool, but
still the same freezes occured.

Ooh...it came down to the AGP aperture :-)

Something I've just discovered, too. 16M seems optimal, and I also found
driving easier with this setting. I'm much more consistent now.

Hehehe...I _knew_ I wasn't _that_ bad a driver ;-)
