GPL 1.1: Why everyone's mad

by Martin Fa » Wed, 14 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Well, I've been reading some of these irate posts from people about GPL
1.1 and can imagine the veins popping out on necks and foreheads.  There
is only one reason for this, it's called ***ION!  We've all been
hooked into an I.V. feeding us the most immersive, realistic, freakishly
awesome racing simulator ever created for the computer and suddenly
there's a small amount of poison coming down the tube (v 1.1).  I've
played all of the big name racing games for many years now and never
have I found myself close to calling myself ***ed (to any game) until
GPL came along.  Since 1.1 came out though, after reading the newsgroup
posts, I'm happy to say that I'm not nearly as bad off as some of these
guys!!  JEEZ!  (Ritalin anyone?)

That said, let's give Papy (Randy and Eric et. al.) a break!!  They've
been incredibly helpful all year since the game came out with regular
postings to this group.  As an engineer myself, I know they are probably
not happy campers right now and are working hard (on their own time?) to

it!!!  Remember how much fun you've had in the last 8 months for only
$35!!!!! (computer upgrade costs don't count...).

What he said. One could also calmly try working with core.ini and reporting
results. Heck, it might even help!

If you are talking about people flaming Papy/Randy et al, I agree. I
am grateful for their efforts as are all sim fans. OTOH, any post that
calmly provides more information about the problems is of benefit to
them, and people should be encouraged to continue reporting problems.

Also, if we can replicate problems on more than one system they are
easier to solve; for example I haven't heard from anyone who has
online wwarping quite as bad as me.

I mean you should SEE how 1.1 acts here (on a very fast cable modem,
low pings, perfect frame rate, GPL 1.0-compatible system). Cars
warping out for 10-15 seconds at a time, even when they are STANDING
STILL. I'll go to the starting gate at the beginning of a race. Cars
start popping in. Then, five seconds before the race starts, POOF,
every one of them warps out! Then fif*** seconds later they warp back
in, already running, 200 feet down the track.

(BTW, Papyrus/Randy/Eric: I'm not sure, but this seems to happen every
time I get a massive 10-15 second warp - I seem to lose ALL cars, not
just one of them.)

If I hadn't seen GPL 1.0 working online (flawlessly, on this exact
same system as recently as last week) I would have difficulty
believing that the GPL online code worked at all. That's how bad it is
on some systems. I've tried every CORE.INI setting on the net.
Something very wierd is going on, so we need to provide Papy with as
much information about it as possible (like you I am sure they are not
too happy and are working hard to diagnose problems).

I was talking about the people flaming Papy only, i.e. "the Dash
------------- Man" etc.  I agree that there have been plenty of constructive
posts as well. :-)
