Forget RAC Rally for a start, it is really unrealistic and doesn't
handle like a real car at all. It's like driving down a tunnel with
trees and hills painted on the walls. You just bounce off the walls
and it slows you down a little bit.
Screamer 2, awesome game, moves like a rocket on even the slowest
Pentium. Good Sega Rally type handling, but the tracks are too short
to make it more of a game rather than a simulation.
Monster Truck Madness, strangely enough is quite a good Rally game on
most of it's circuits. You have complete freedom of movement to drive
anywhere you want, follow the track or just go off for a bimble and
explore. Out of all the games it has the best virtual world to drive
around in, and the handling of the vehicles is pretty good too. The
only downside is that you're driving those big stupid trucks.
You also need a monster PC to run it.
Need For Speed has quite a good rally track (you have to cheat to get
it) and then it's only fun driving it in the 911, but you get hammered
by the more powerful cars.
The best Rally game of all time would have the following, the Monster
Truck Madness virtual world to drive around in with longer tracks, the
types of cars from RAC Rally, but with the handling a cross between
MTM and Screamer 2. Of course it would all look as good as Screamer
2/MTM and go like a rocket on a 286, have modem, IP and IPX network
support and cost about two quid. Get programming!
Cheers,
Mik
