Just wait a little while for Rally Championship by Europress/Magnetic
Fields. It's going to be special, and may very well be the best sim ever.

Is that #9 Castrol car in the Mpeg real or in the game?  It looks like
real footage.  Aside from that, the incar view looks kind of "jerky" when
it corners...

If anyone is interested there are some videos and sound clips at
http://www.rally99.com/download.html  This is the first I've heard of
this sim.  It looks like it could be real fun :)

The Corolla in the FMV sequences uses the EXACT same model as the in game
car - with around 1200 polys. The textures are also the in game textures!

The only difference is the motion blur and antialiasing provided by
Lightwave.

A note to KQ; the graphics are amazing (if the framerate is acceptable), and
the MP3's certainly sound promising; especially the Nissan Micra.  But however
long it takes to get this sucker to market, PLEASE don't skimp on the physics
or control setup.  That's where a SIM lives or dies, and no amount of eye candy
can salvage something that doesn't "feel" right.  Just look at the  devotion
here to GPL, a game with good, but not exceptional graphics.  We don't just
want to watch the pretty scenery fly past, we want to feel that car DANCE!  So
don't just shoot for beating CMR; aim higher.

A rally-deprived yank,

What scares me is that the people who've written this produced the awful RAC
and International rally championships.  They seemed to have this ***ion
to straight roads, and by the looks of the movie, that doesn't look like
it's changed - but hear this:  I WANT TO BE PROVED WRONG.  I'd love a proper
rally sim.
The contradiction I've heard regarding it's authenticity is worrying.  There
was an interview at GA-Sports, and though I can't remember it word for word,
there was one section where the producer (I think) said "The tracks are
modelled from the real stages of the BRC" then later said "We've got a cool
track editor that allows us to press a button in the editor and drive the
course we're working on immediately - if we don't like how it plays we can
change it and this saves development time".  Hmmm, so if the real layout
doesn't play to the developers liking, they'll make some changes to it?  Bet
Gwyndaf, Martin et al wish they had that power...
Like I said though, this is one occasion I hope I'm wrong.

Colin McRae Rally.
Okay, you MIGHT want to wait for Rally 99, but I'm afraid it will be a big
disappointment. I've waited months and months for their previous RC game,
and it was one of the biggest disappointemts of my (computer) life... Bad
graphics, lowsy car handling, just awful... And all that after a huge hype
and incredible good previews... I can't help it it but 'm afraid the hype
that's being created now already, is created to let all people buy the game
the day it hits the shelves. Just to leave everyone in tears and running
back to Colin McRae in a rush. I hope I'm wrong. But I think I'm right.
There is too much emphasis (did I spell that right?) on the "great
graphics", too little talk about great car-handling. BTW If you want real
great car handling (and a bit of that rally car feel), get TOCA 2! It's
absolutely awesome! Maybe the graphics aren't really up to today's standard
(!), but that game is as real as the real thing! And I have to say, driving
real close to other competitors is really nice, after driving the streets
alone in Colin McRae Rally for a few months now...

I couldn't agree more. Physics are the most important aspect of a racing
game, especially a rallying sim.

The video you have seen is a very early version, when the physics model was
so underdeveloped it had handling similar to Quake! This explains the 'on
rails' feeling when watching the footage.

IRC was a huge dissapointment, I brought it for 40 and sold it 2 weeks
later for 15!

This is a quote from a Mag Fields employee from y site forum :

"We won't be releasing anything until the physics are spot on - we know what
went wrong with IRC and we know which games we need to beat.

We have BRC drivers lineing up to test drive the physics and force feedback
for us, so the car feel should be perfect".

I will not by RC if the handling isn't at least as good as CMR, and Magnetic
Fields and Europress should know this. They want to sell as many copies as
possible, and that means beating the competition.

Look and listen to/at the game so far, Surely Mag Fields would not spoil a
game on the last thing we have not seen, would they?

Back to a more graphical note, there are 4 news screenshots on my site now :

Cheers :)

Never mind the quality, feel the width...

Long straights and a good sensation of speed do no a good rally game make.

Although I have to say there's not really much competition out there for the
title of "best rally game".  CMR may be short on stage length, but handling
at least feels good enough for the old suspension of disbelief.
