You can get the demo by clicking on the "Manni's F1 Racing Sim Page" link.
17 megs I believe. According to the owner of the Unofficial F1 page, the
demo (as usual with demos) is not a very good representation of the full sim
(much better he says) but I'm sure most of us will still want to check it
out.

When I posted this link to the demo, I hadn't tried it yet. Now I have. All
I can say is WOW!! I'm blown away by this. The demo has Monaco (of course)
and also Austria.

Just some quick thoughts.

The physics have been changed dramatically from the first F1RS and for the
better IMO. The car now feels like it has some weight to it and the power
comes on smoother, not on/off as before. I don't know what kind of setup the
car has, so it's hard to really judge the new car physics in detail without
that info, but it definitely has a much more realistic feel to it. The car's
rear end can be slid through a tight turn now because of the improved
throttle response and feels (vague term I know) the way I've always imagined
a F1 car would.

Graphics are greatly improved and I honestly feel that they are the best I
have ever seen in any sim. By far. Really incredible. Amazing. Stunning.
Beautiful. I could go on.  :-) With a ten car field, on a P200 Voodoo1, full
graphics, it was smooooth as silk. Again, smoothest sim on my computer I've
ever seen. Not one damn hiccup or glitch. Surprising since that is not a
fast machine anymore. The cars are more metallic, the tires are not squared,
and everything seems more three dimensional and solid. No more of those
jiggly roadside objects either. It seems to me that every aspect of the
graphics  has been improved. Monaco looks beautiful. Austria is gorgeous
too. I'm gushing here but I really mean what I'm saying. Take a slow lap and
just look around at the tracks and you'll see what I mean. Incredible detail
everywhere. Even the pit garages have been detailed.

There is a new view (high***pit) which will help some rookie drivers make
that transition to the full***pit view a little easier.

Sounds are new, and I think better, but nobody seems to agree what the
sounds should be like in sims, so I'm sure opinions will vary greatly.

It also looks like the menus have changed for the better. New telemetry too.

These are the initial thoughts of the MGP demo from someone who is on that
little high we all get (you know what I mean) when we try something new in
auto sims that impresses the hell out of us.
Based on what I see in this demo, I expect the full version to be absolutely
amazing.

I thought about doing a quick review, too, but you already said
everything,
and I can just follow you in praising the changes they did.

Just a few things I didn't like:

True, MGPR (???) is a sim, I'm just surprised, that they release a demo,
where you're car has such a bad setup that it's impossible to keep up
with the other guys (or is it my driving? ;^). It doesn't really bother
me, I just think they could loose quite a few buyers who get pissed off
having no chance to keep up with the AI at all in the demo.

Then, I still think, that the gas is TOO sensitive. In 1st, 2nd and even
3rd gear on my CH Pedals it's about 3 mm of movement that decides
between
wheel spin and smooth acceleration. There's just no way, a real F1
driver
could handle a gas pedal that sensitive through a whole race.

Last, but not least, the automatic pit stops still annoy me very much.

I see troubling decisions coming up: Uff, another lap at the Ring in
GPL,
or some more laps in Austria in MGPR... ;^)

I too downloaded the Monaco Grand Prix demo, and must say that I am
quite impressed with the speed of that thing. It feels and drives like
an update to f1rs (even the menus are the old ugly ones, and they kept
that lovely animated mouse pointer for us, too 8-P ) Frame rate is
great, apart from when hitting things or going over the rubble, but
it's really amazing they managed to speed up f1rs whereas the usual
version2's require more hardware. It might be due to the fact that
you have only 10 opponents, but the first corner slowdown is gone
that even made it into version 1.09 of f1rs.

the sound still sucks, but is slightly better than what f1rs gave
us. The volume is now settable from the menu (which feels faster too)
instead of having to hack .ini files by hand.

Opponent AI seems improved, too (one of the weak points of F1RS
IMHO). Cars try to overtake each other, drivers making errors and so
on. Although I got lapped several times I still saw no blue flags,
looks like we'll never ever see a racing sim implementing this
feature. ;-)

The introductory screen mentions a career and scenario mode, although
I'm not sure what this is going to be.

Yep, graphics are nice, but I still don't like the car bodies as
much as the ones in gp2. they just look too pointy for my taste.

I had the impression that the austria track seriously lacks the
elevation changes that you see on TV.

All we get to see in the demo is a screenshot though, no functional
telemetry.

I agree. This thing will definitely iron out most of the flaws that
f1rs suffered from, altough I would find it only fair if f1rs owners
could upgrade instead of paying the full price.

Cheers,

Uwe

I spoke to the demo'er at the Ubisoft ECTS stand extensively about this, and
for me, it's a huge selling point.

Career mode places you as a "real" F1 driver. You'll start of in for e,g a
Minardi, and have to secure defined results not only to progress to a bigger
and better team, but to keep your drive! Likewise, damange to many cars......

+, there is the Spare Car feature as well- You have to be mindful that during
a weekend you can not push to hard... or you won;t have a car to race come
sunday.

surprised, that they release a demo,

It's not your driving. :-)  I'm not really surprised by the poor setup. When
was the last time a sim demo was released with a good one? Silly but true.

Depends on your mood at the moment. Do you want to be pretend you are Schumi
or one of those great old timers? I'm sure we will be doing both.

The full version does have blue flags. CPR had them too.

Watch the other cars in the TV view during the race and you'll see the
elevation changes more clearly. I was surprised.

I'd buy it just for the multiplay gameservice option but I understand your
opinion.

Remember that the blue flag in the era represented by GP Legends was
simply a warning to the driver that he was being closely followed by
another car (or cars).

No penalties were incurred for "ignoring" the flag, as is the rule
today.

Is there something new about the reaction on the car when you hit the
grass or the sand ? Is it more like GP2 or like F1RS ?

I don't remember how it was in GP2, but it's about the same as in F1RS
after the last patch. On grass I think it's quite accurate now.

My first impression is that grass and sand are still a bit sticky, but
definitely better than in F1RS. Especially sand won't safe you from a
crash against a wall any longer if you make a serious driving mistake.
