GPL FF is outstanding! I apologise!

Having put down the force feedback in Grand Prix Legends, and being
asked to go back and try it again, I can only apologise and admit that
I was utterly mistaken in my earlier message.

The FF effects in GPL are quite incredible!

I've learnt my mistake however. I had the settings for Return to
Centre turned to High, which unfortunately for a game like GPL, which
requires subtle control movements, really isn't very good, because I
was forced to fight the wheel the entire time I was driving.

Having turned the centre effects to low, and the FF effects to Medium,
I can now give an honest and accurate opinion. Papy did a stunning job
for the FF patch!

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to use the force feedback with
GPL if I want to do well in a race, as my current PC is dreadfully
slow, and when force feedback is activated (surprisingly, I only
notice this with GPL), there is a major drop in frame rate, as well as
the feeling that the accelerator isn't working. The car seems to
stutter forward, in a similar way to when the car has an oil leak.

Not entirely sure why this is happening, so if any of you have
experienced this before and have a solution, please let me know what
you did to remedy it.

Thats not related to framerate, I found its some kind of bug, I solved it by
uninstalling, re-installing gpl (dont run yet) Install 1.2 (dont run yet)
rename your sample.ini to core.ini turn force feedback on (to a 1) then
start  gpl, type in name, then callibrate wheel (with ff on, if you have ms
wheel) After I did that the stuttering part went completely away for me!

I'll give that a try, thanks.

Didn't the latest patch Readme say something about FF controllers
causing a drop in frame rate? I could be wrong however. Perhaps they
didn't resolve this issue as well as they thought they had done.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it!

Different wheels use different amounts of CPU time to have commands
sent to them by the software. Most game, like NFS, send almost nothing
TO the wheel, since they just use cheap shaking collision/texture
effects. GPL is constantly sending real feedback info to the wheel,
hence the performance hit.

I don't recall the exact numbers, but the Logitech wheel has great
performance (no noticeable hit), the Microsoft is mediocre, and the
Thrustmaster wheel is TERRIBLE.

I thought the effects were bad also until I read posts about the setups for FF.
I have not noticed any drop in frame rate with my LWFF.

Set the 'return to center' to off. That's the way it's supposed to be.
In fact, GPL *tries* to turn it off, but there's a problem inside
DirectX or the drivers so that not all wheels actually DO turn it off.

Surely, in a real car, you would be amazed if your wheel tried to
center itself while you were standing still? ;-)

I haven't noticed much of a hit in GPL \ N3 \ NL or SCGT with my new MSFF
but DTR on the other hand is impossible for me to play. I only have a
P233MMX, 64mb RAM & 16mb Maxi Gamer Phoenix Voodoo Banshee system but DTR
plays really smoothly without FF. I haven't tried reducing the number of
cars yet so i'll give that a go later on.
