V2 FPS in GPL? (I apologize)

by Otto Mathek » Wed, 28 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Yes, I know this topic has been hacked to death.

Just popped a V2 in my 450 celery system and I am a bit underwhelmed by
the performance increase for my investment.  My primary card is an S220
and I was getting 36 FPS in practice at 640 x 480.  Added a V2 and can
now do 36 FPS at 800 x 600 but at any higher resolutions the FPS drop
below 30.  (mirrors set for cars only, all eye candy on.)  Since I am a
bad, bad, driver I have not yet assessed performance in a race.   (I
need to set things to race F3).

Is this performance about right?  What kind of FPS should I expect in a
race at 800?  I don't  mind the way it looks - although Rendition looks
better.   I just expected more speed.  If I go V3 or TNT, I can't drive
my Superbird in N2 : ( .

With one kid in braces and another starting college, I am frightened by
the implications of the fact that the next step - going SLI - has even
entered my head - i.e. "Stop whining, we'll have food next week!"  (As
if $100 would feed ***age boys for a week) Are there any GPL 12 step
groups yet?

Again, apologies for bringing  up this old topic.

Otto, I too have a c450 rig, but with sli Pure3d 2 v2's.  I must turn down
graphic goodies to maintain 36 fps in races.  I run at 800x600, detail bias
about 1/4 from left, 8sounds, nuthin but track  and car graphics.  It
doesn't look as good, but I get a solid 36 in heavy traffic online.

You really need to test your system in racing conditions sometime.  It would
suck to get it running smooth in a solo practice only to get a slideshow at
the starting grid.

College kids have a way of finding food on their own.
and the kid with braces shouldn't be eatin anyway. ;-)
Hit a club store, and get a bulk box of cheeto's. that'll fix'm for a week.

One of the effects I've noticed with detail bias is that it changes the
way other cars are drawn as they disappear into the distance ahead of
you (something I have a lot of experience of unfortunately).

With the detail bias set low, the cars change to a sort of grey smudge
when they're still clearly visible. However, taking the bias all the way
to the left made a big difference to my FPS (on a 233MMX) and was one of
the 2 biggest factors in making the game playable - the other being
setting SoundQuality to 0 in app.ini

Otto, You must know that GPL does not take advantage of sli so there is
nothing to gain, in fact it may even cause a performance drop. I also run a
celery 450 and am very satisfied with a Hercules Thriller 8 meg pci. At
800x600 and all eye candy on (slider50%) I get  36 fps by the time I shift
to 2nd gear. I tried a v2 and it was slower and didn't look as good.
And for sure it killed N2/N99..... sorry, I'm hooked on papy sims, can't
wait for N3!!!

There is NO performance drop in GPL when using two Voodoo2s in SLI mode.
Since GPL isn't fill rate limited there is as much of a performance gain as
there is in other games such as Quake2.

Numero Uno:   find and download Glide2x.zip.
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
It's the first one on the page, the unofficial 3dfx patch by the genius
George M. Smiley.   I set my mirrors on 6, the detail bias half-way, and
I get nearly the same fps for 1024x768 as I do 800x600, with a full grid,
and that is how I race.   Some tracks can stand a little more detail, with
half the field, all the detail.   The key is that the 3dfx is bad at drawing
the mirrors, so set the mirrors to refresh only every third or sixth frame.
Even so, the inside***pit view is not always as fast.  Sometimes, I use the
outside view for the start, and the***pit for the rest, that way I can race
with a full field at full detail, maxed at 36fps most of the time.
