Simple question about Hawaii rankings...

by Scott M. Pett » Wed, 01 May 1996 04:00:00

Just a quick question for the Papyrus guys (or anyone else who knows):
if you leave a race during practice (before qualifying) do you take a
ranking hit?  Last night I had to leave a race before qualifying to put
my daughter back to sleep (she was having bad dreams about Jimmy
Spencer;-)).  My ranking is as important as food to me and I don't want
to***it up if possible...

Kudos to the creators of NASCAR Racing and Hawaii.  This is BY FAR the
funnest most absorbing experience I've ever had in a computer
simulation.  Now I'll just need a second job to pay the LD bill...

Thanks,

Scott (SMPetty on Hawaii)

I have been told by Ed Martin that you are only penalized if you quit
once the race has started.  You can even quit during qualifying and not
be penalized. Hope this is right?  Ed?

: Your ranking is nnot effected until the race session begins.

Ed, you've mentioned before that it's not affected until the qualifying
session. You said that if you exit the event during the qualifying, that
you will get credited with last place.

Which is it? Qualifying or the Race event that makes the difference.

Hey SMPetty.  You probably don't remember me but I raced against you
late Monday night.  It was a 20% race at Talledega and you and someone
else pulled away from me.   I'm pretty sure you won.  From what I saw
earlier in the race where I was able to keep up. . .   you and the
other guy drove a great race.   I think his name started with a V
(Vericos?)

I read on an another message in this newsgroup that nothing counts
until the green flag waves.  I think that means even when you are
driving the pace lap, you can still quit.

I've heard that a mediocre game becomes very good when you had modem
or LAN multiplayer feature.   NASCAR racing was a great game to begin
with. . .  excellent with 2player modem. . .   unbelievable with 32
players.   Those long distance companies have to mess everything up.

A driver is considered "entered" into a race, for skill level purposes,
when he/she begins the qualifying session.  Leaving anytime before that
will result in that driver not showing up in the race results at all.
Drivers who exit during/after qualifying OR before/during the pace lap,
are considered in the race, and will be rated as if they finished last.

Bill - which would you prefer?  I think we'd like not to rate people until
the end of qualifying session, but if we do that, some people will drop out
of races if they don't like their qualifying speed.  This would suggest
perhaps that any race in which you take the green flag during qualifying
should be rated.  Does this sound reasonable to you?

Charlie,
I'm not Bill but I wanted to pitch in my nickel here. Last night I thought I'd
give Bristol a try, as it was the only thing forming at that instant (Can't
just "Hang-around" ya know!!) Anyway, after qualifying standings were posted,
it was obvious I was gonna get my ass handed to me on a titanium platter.
Rather than be a nuisance to others I decided to hit EJECT, go off line, and
work on my setup some more. Beleiving I was not penalized for bailing out
before entering the RACE mode, hopefully made for a better race for others.
Happy Lappin,

Seems to me that you could also detect when a driver loses his connection so that it doesn't
count against him.  But then what would stop them from disconnecting their phone line.  Never
mind ...

Yes, but how can we distinguish between a racer who loses the
connection do to "technical difficulties", and a racer that loses the
conection on purpose (i.e. yank out the old phone cord).  That would be
a huge cheat for people who want to protect their skill level just
because they are doing well in a race.

That's why I said "Never mind ..."
