best modem for online racing?

by R Keatin » Tue, 28 Aug 2001 00:41:07

I need to replace my modem.  I don't know if I'd be able to get the speed
necessary to race on line, but I thought I'd ask here for advice.  I am
making the assumption that the best modem for on line racing would be very
good for general web work also (correct me if I'm wrong).

I am open to internal (PCI or ISA), external (serial or USB).  I am running
Windows ME on a 800Mhz PIII with Voodoo 5.

On line GPL or N4 sure would be nice.  I know there are no guarantees, but I
need a new modem anyway.

Thanks in advance,
Russell

Russell, any current 56k non-winmodem will do for online ***
.....nonwinmodem meaning a real, hardware based modem and not one which
depends on your processor to do part of it's work. if it says software-based
on the box leave it.Once you have your modem installed, go to properties and
disable error correction and data compression.....while there, also select a
slower connection speed, say, 21600, 28800, 31200 or so......these settings
will help to insure a steady, smooth connection versus a spiky higher speed
connection.  Your surfing will not be impacted, and the *** will be much
smoother at these settings. Of course, we're still talking dial-up here, and
you can't really compare it to a DSL or Cable connection for online ***.
But dialup alone should not keep you away from ***. And the best advice I
can offer, get a wheel and pedals.
And be assured, online N4 and GPL is indeed, very nice. ***ive,
probably. Marriage threatening, likely. Fun, Hell Yes!

I agree with all of Ed's points, but would add that you can setup a separate
connection (at the aforementioned slower speeds) for ***, and a faster one
for websurfing.

I connect at 19600 for *** (GPL) and at around 49000 when web-surfing.  The
only annoyance is that you have to re-dial.
