Modem for online racing

by Peter Hoope » Thu, 10 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Looking for a bit of advice on the type of modem that is suitable for online
racing. I have read on here in the past something about Winmodems not being
too clever for this, how do I know if my modem is one of these? My modem is
actually called a HSP Modem and from what I have been able to find out this
stands for 'Host Signal Processing' which appears to mean (if I understand
correctly) that it is in effect some sort of software modem. Is this what a
Winmodem is?

Would this therefore mean I am likely to have problems with online racing,
or more importantl cause problems for others in races that I joined. The
modem actually seems to be pretty good for normal web related stuff but I
really want to try to get into online racing now (although I am still quite
a bit off the pace at the moment, yet to break the 1:30 at Monza for
instance).

Is there a way for me to test the modems performance without spoiling things
for others at the same time??

Hope someone can give me some advice.

Many Thanks

Peter Hooper

PS:- Should I really wait until I have improved my times before joining all
you online hotshoes?? As mentioned above I am still not below 1:30 at Monza,
hopefully won't be too long now though.

I'm no expert on the technical aspects of modems, but if yours is a "software"
modem (your words), you have a Winmodem.

Again, not knowing all the technical details, Winmodems may be fine for normal
web-surfing, but they're not very good for online ***.  I think the reason
has to do with the CPU having a heavier load just to run the modem.

Check out      www.vroc.net     and read through everything until you find the
area on modems and online connections.  I think that there is a full explanation
there.

Peter, If you can keep it between the walls and hold your line while a
faster driver is attempting a pass, you can race online. There are plenty of
guys averaging in the 1:30s at Monza, you'll not have a problem finding
someone to race with. There will always be someone faster but don't let that
keep you from joining the VROC community, it really is a tremendous amount
of fun.

I think you are fast enough to start racing online.  It is most
important imo that you can be consistant and have good enough car
control to keep from crashing others.  Be prepared to not race too hard
to the first corner and to move over for faster drivers.  I have to do
this a lot but still have tons of fun.  Yes, it sounds like you have a
win modem.  There are some tweaks you can do for it at alison's site.
http://simracing.com/alison/gpl/  The most important is to limit your
connect speed to about 26400.  The next most important are probably the
fifo buffers and data compression imo.  I have a cheap winmodem and a
crappy dial line and it works just fine with no tweaks.

I run a winmodem with great success for online GPL. A few winmodems seem to
be no good for online racing, but the majority seem fine.
The best way to test the modem is to come and race with us in WinVroc :)

One tip though ......keep your frame rate at 36fps ALL the time when you are
racing online.  (Perhaps make a second driver profile with lower graphics
settings to use for online races)

Many thanks for all the replies guys....
I'm gonna spend a bit of time at Alisons site reading all the relevant
online stuff and then will be along to join you all, well on the grid at
least because you will all probably be long gone by the time I get to the
first turn ;O)

This article on the Dirt Track Racing Late Model Players Guide site is
aimed at people getting into online racing with DTR, but I referenced a
lot of Allison's stuff (along with links), and I tried to go into some
detail about the various tweaks that you need to make in order to get a
more stable dial-up networking connection for online racing.  Check it
out at:

Enjoy!
