F1 2001 lockup problems

by Aaron Dershe » Thu, 21 Feb 2002 12:54:39

I bought F1 2001 today, downloaded the patch, installed the 23.11 geForce
drivers, and still it locks up.  Here's my comp. setup:

Duron 1.1 GHz
ECS K7S5 Motherboard
512 MB generic RAM (PC133, CAS 3)
Hercules 3D Prophet II (geForce 2 MX 400) with 23.11 drivers
Hercules Fortissimo 2 sound card (1.02 drivers)
Logitech Formula Wheel (non FF - the older, yellow one)

I can run through the setup menus and I select quickrace.  When it starts
going through the starting grid, it locks up the computer and I have to
reset the computer.  Is this a graphics driver problem?  If so, what version
of the drivers is optimal for this game?

Thanks for any help,

Aaron.

have you tried shutting down the background tasks?  either by pressing
ctrl-alt-del at the same time or using a utility like Enditall2?  Have you
checked the device manager in the control panel to see if your video card
and sound card may have irq conflicts?  Good luck...keep asking questions
til we figure out what's going on.

My video card is sharing PCI IRQ 5 with the sound card and one of the USB
hubs.  BTW, I'm running XP Pro as my OS.  From what I understand, though,
ACPI-compliant systems can share IRQs as "legal".  The only way to stop that
is to disable ACPI (which is kinda a no-no).

The only program running in the background is Motherboard Monitor 5.

Should I try to stop some of the XP services?  I'd like to leave most of
them alone - they are supposed to be safe that way, but games do lke to take
over the whole computer when running, right?

Thanks,

Aaron.

Well the hardware manufacturers will say that irq conflicts are NOT  a
problem anymore with the latest versions of windows.  But....reading any
motherboard newsgroup will show dozens of posts regarding irq conflicts.
I don't have XP, I hope somebody else can jump in with some help, but the
OLD way of changing IRQ's was to remove the device from the device manager,
and then physically take out the soundcard and place it in another PCI slot.
Good luck.

Sounds a bit like my experience.
Is your Graphics card supported?  (check in the fine print on the package -
many common cards are NOT)

I had to return the game (finally email acknowledgement from tech support
that my video card wasn't supported, return the game to EA Warranty,
replacement with sealed game, return of sealed game to Radio Shack for
refund- what a hassle!!!)

I think I solved the problem.  I just ran a successful Quick Race... It was
a memory timing issue.  I slowed the timing down a bit, and no more lockups!
Everything still runs fast and fine.

It looks great too!
