GPL - PII 333mhz or 2nd Voodoo 2?

by SpeedFree » Sat, 03 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi folks....

I run GPL on the following hardware...

PII 233mhz
440LX motherboard...66mhz bus speed
64mb SDRAM
S3 virge 4mb 2d/3d card
12mb Voodoo 2

Without upgrading my motherboard, what is my best route for improving
performance in GPL? Upgrade to PII 333mhz (highest my motherboard can go),
or SLI 2 Voodoo 2 cards together? Or something else I haven't thought of?

but online I have to get rid of most of the graphical niceties to get up to
36fps.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.....

All the best from
SpeedFreek.

I'd say go with the processor upgrade. Chances are your PII isn't fast
enough to take full advantage of SLI mode Voodoo2 anyway. GPL runs
fine with just one Voodoo2-card, it's the CPU power that determines
mostly.

Your 233Mhz cpu will probably not even max out your single Voodoo2 card, let
alone V2 SLI. My advice would be to go for a PII 333 Mhz to max out your
board, or get yourself a BX-board with a cheap Celeron 300a, and overclock
it to 450 (shouldn't be a problem). In time, you might want to think about
upgrading to 128MB SDRAM.

Best of luck!

How do you connect online.  If you are using a winmodem, get rid of that,
they are cpu hogs.  This could be causing the change in fps between online
and offline races.

Processor - I'm not sure that another Voodoo2 will make all that amount of
difference with GPL, whereas the processor certainly will.

Without upgrading your MB...mmmm

1. A PCI sound card or one that will take some of the work away from the CPU
2. If you are using a wheel try a digital gameport  (DPDI for example)
rather than the one on the sound card.
3. O/C your MB if possible, but learn how to do it safely.
4. Cable or external USB modem.
5. Win98

Of course these changes can be taken with you to the new MB.

I would say forget the PII-333. If your LX motherboard was made by a
well-known manufacturer, there will be a BIOS upgrade on their website. By
using this you could fit up to a Celeron 433, much faster than a PII-333.
Also, they overclock very easily by using the 75 Mhz bus setting instead of
66 Mhz.
Similar to the other respondent, I've just fitted a Celeron 400 in a
15-month old LX board, and it runs fine at 450 Mhz all day. The performance
is similar to a friend's PII-450.

Hi folks!

Hmmmm.... It seems as if the SLI option won't help me.... So now I will have
to decide wether to go for PII 333 or Celeron overclocked. The plot
thickens!

I have very limited technical knowledge with PCs, so overclocking sounds a
bit scarey to me! (Well, having said that, even just upgrading the processor
sounds scarey!)

Another problem is I don't have a motherboard manual (doh!), so it looks
like it's time to get trawling the net for info on my motherboard (GA686LX).
Where on the m/b do I find out the manufacturer, or is it in the info at
startup?

Thanks to everyone for all their help....

For my money, it appears that you have a Gigabyte board.  Check out

GPL - PII 333mhz or 2nd Voodoo 2?

Go straight with teh 333MHz update for one reason. The card is currently
faster then your computer can handle, so if the cpu would be able to do more
calculations, you'll be able to run a full field as i use a 300mhz voodo2 8
mbs card and run full field, and full graphics at 640x480 on rendition
without a problem, and best view, 1024x something with voodoo.
