Please recomend a video card for me.

by James Dean Cory, D.C » Thu, 17 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I have a AMD K 6 266 MMX, 36 megs ram, running Windows 98.  Please recommend
a PCI video card that I can get for under $150.  It has to do both 2D and 3D
as I do not have a extra slot for a separate 3D card.  I have games such as
GP2, Power F1, TOCA, and would like to play Tomb Raider 1 & 2.  I have been
thinking about the ATI Expert 98 [8 meg], and the Diamond Viper 330 [8 meg],
I understand that the makers of the monster 3D card is just about to release
a combined 2D/3D card [Banshee?] that may fit my price range.  I understand
that I may not see improvement in GP2 and Power F1 but TOCA and Tomb Raider
should benefit from some acceleration.  Please E-mail me with a
recommendation.

Thanks for taking the time!

Diamond Viper 330 [8 meg]  you're just not going to have problems
with it, across the 2d/3d world !   You might want to hold out and wait
for the Banshee but i doubt if it will be under $150.00.
I wouldn't mind getting the Banshee, myself.  I have a Viper (PCI) 330
4 meg with two Diamond monster Voodoo2's (SLI).  I'm think of getting
the Diamond viper 550.

The Voodoo 2 card is the best graphics accelerator but also one of the most
expensive, Voodoo 1 still beats most 2D/3D cards. Both TOCA and Tomb Raider will
benefit greatly from a Voodoo. For a comprehensive look at graphics cards check
out Tom's Hardware page - this guy knows everything there is to know...

I've thrown some links at the bottom of this note.  Before you listen to
ANYBODY for a recommendation, try each of the sites and see what they
have to say about each card.

Each of the sites test the cards on a gazillion different games and
reports true framerates on each, so you're not getting some sort of
invalid benchmark number (Winbench, etc.) but real-world game
performance.  www.tomshardware.com does a great job of displaying the
cards in a graphical format.

I'm currently using a Matrox G200 based card (they JUST released the PCI
version) and they are about US$120 for an 8MB card.  Some of the models
have expansion slots for an additional 8MB (US$50) when you're ready for
it.

You will not believe how devoted some people are to their cards.  Take
all recommendations with a grain of salt.  Even mine...

Captains log:  StarDate Wed, 16 Sep 1998 14:21:23 -0500.  While
patrolling "alt.games.tombraider", I received the following message
from an entity calling itself ""James Dean Cory, D.C."

I'm assuming you have an AGP slot.  The diamond stealth G460 would do
nicely.  Gets great reviews and is well supported.  The real 3d card
is nice also.
