WIll F1 2000 run better with a Geforce?

When I temporarily substituted a Creative Labs GeForce2 for my Voodoo
3000 in my P3 550, I found only a 2 or 3 frame-per-second increase. In
some spots of the track (Nurburgring) with higher levels of detail, it
was actually about 1 fps slower. Other folks in this newsgroup have
pointed out that racing sims tend to be CPU-limited, rather than
video-card-limited.

As always, your mileage may vary...

Actually I think it will run better with a V5 5500. Of for no other
reason than the menus will not be porked :-)

Yep, my Geforce2 is going back as soon as the store gets in a Voodoo5
for exactly that reason. Same problem with SCGT too. If you want FSAA
then forget the Geforce2. I kind of knew that when I bought a Gef2,
but had to see it for myself. Now that I have tried one I am fully
qualified to call it a piece of crap. :-)

You must have tried it at least 6 minutes, then...     ;-)

From what I have been reading, FSAA is only really good for older
games as it supposedly has a huge performance hit. So with newer
games that need the fastest CPU just on general principals, FSAA
is not supposed to help as it would kill framerate.

I am also not convinced that the V5-5500 will vastly improve the
framerate in F1 20000, SCGT, N3, EAW, F4, Freespace2 and
anyother game I might have forgotten. If it boosted my F12K
framerate from 20 to 30 or 35 in a Grandprix with a full field then
I would certainly be interested. Also if it would boost the framerate
in F4's campaign (1024x768) from 25 to *MUCH* higher I would
also be interested. I am not sure my 12 MB Voodoo2 and my
old trusty 16MB TNT is worth replacing at this point. All of my
games are running at a great framerate.

So why should I upgrade? Oh wait... Because I want to***
around with immature drivers that don't work worth a darn :-)

Considering that the GF2 blows V5 away in Quake3 I really can't see it being
much (if at all) better than GF2 in driving sims. Although the V5's D3D
performance is a lot closer (if not better?) to GF2 than under openGL.

800x600 - give me higher res over AA any day.

Both cards are good solutions, both will sell well, both companies will live
to fight the next round : )

The Voodoo5 5500 really cannot tip the performance of a GeForce2 GTS.

Just read the V5 5500 review at http://www.thetechzone.com/
This guy runs a 3dmark2000 benchmark test on his 825 mhz computer with
Voodoo5, he only scores 4200 points whille I with a slightly slower cpu
(800) but with GeForce 2 GTS score 6388 points.

I just swapped my old Voodoo3 with a GeForce 2 GTS. The voodoo3 used to give
me around 3500 points in 3dmark2000.

It's quite clear that the GeForce 2 is the fastest and best card around atm.
3Dfx is only playing catching up...

Yep. I have been doing autosims longer than flight sims :-)

Noted. FSAA is ***on the GF2 cards.

Frankly I agree with nos about the benchmark stuff. How about loading
up F1 2000 with fraps and let us know what you get for framerates.
That would be a meaningful number. Then please compare with
a V5 or V3. I suspect you will not see much of a difference if any at all.
And those are the important numbers.

Well as I said in another post, if I knew that a V5 5500 would run F12K
or F2 *MUCH* faster than my old trusty Voodoo2 on my P3-600E, then
I would immediately get one. I haven't heard that yet though. Maybe
papadocs Geforce2 vs V5 5500 review will tip the scales for me?

Hehe...nope, unlike that "crap" game, I have actually had the Geforce2
in my machine for two weeks.

Depends on what cpu. The V5 scales with the cpu very well. On a P3 800

you really cared about frame rates you wouldn't run your games at that
res anyway.
