Forgive my ignorance, but can a Voodoo 2 card be used in conjunction with a
Matrox G400. Many thanks.

Shouldn't be a problem at all, the V2 cards are 3D only, and as such
they can be used in combination with just about any 2D/3D card ever
made, there was a problem with the S3-768 I believe, but there was a fix
for that at Diamonds site, I have personally used a pair of V2's with
the following cards

ATI 3DCharger (RageIIC)

ATI Rage Fury (Rage 128)
Diamond Video3200 (S3-868)
Creative Riva TNT2
Creative 3dBlaster 1000 (or something, Rendition V1000)
Hercules Thriller 3D (Rendition 2200)
Matrox Mill/Mystique G200

and only retired them in favour of a V3 card a couple of weeks ago, but
only because I needed those 2 PCI slots for something else, I loved the
freedom I had to choose whatever primary card I wanted and still being
able to play GPL/N2/N99 in 3D mode, if MB's came with more PCI slots I'd
put them back in :-)

Beers and cheers
