GPL & Matrox G400 any good?

GPL & Matrox G400 any good?

by John Fryat » Sun, 14 May 2000 04:00:00

I currently run GPL through a Matrox G200, using the specific G200 grpahics
driver avaialble on GPL Web sites. It seems to work quite well, although the
frame rate could be better.
Here are my questions, for you GPL experts out there....

1. Will GPL run ok on a G400?
2. Will the G200 graphics driver also work with a G400?
3. Would I still be better off picking up a cheap Voodoo2 for GPL, even when
I have the G400?

Incidentally, I am going to get the G400 Dual Head, so that I can run a 15"
monitor alongside my 19". Will that make any difference?
I have tried the OpenGL driver, but that failed miserably.

Thanks for any advice/help,

I would think the issues the G200 would still be there in the
G400.  Not 100% sure on that tho.  A V2 mated with your current card is
a good way to go.  Just make sure you find the 2.54(I think!) 3dfx
drivers and place those in the main GPL folder.  The dual head isssue is
another item of uncertainty.  A: gpl is a much older program I don't
know how it will perform with the dual head.  Anyone?  b: It sounds like
adding a 2nd monitor will be adding to the cpu load.  If you are not
getting full framerates now...I'd really doubt you'd see any
improvements with two monitors....what would you expect to display on
the 2nd monitor?

afaik no one has gotten gpl to work with the g400.  And the glide2x.dll
you want is 2.53 and NOT 2.54 which crashes gpl.

GPL & Matrox G400 any good?

by Phil Flac » Mon, 15 May 2000 04:00:00

G400 here, running on Athlon 800.  Super smooth everywhere, although
there are weird things going on...

* Horizon has black lines around it
* Some tracks have strange multi-coloured noise in the sky (Zandvoort
for one)
* Silverstone has the track fading to black in the near distance
* Gaps and black lines everywhere.

I was running a voodoo2 at the same time, but after upgrading it's
refused to work, so I'm stuck with the G400 :-(

Regarding DualHead, I don't believe it is possible to run that when
you're also running OpenGL.. Or maybe it was something else.. Whatever,
you need to turn it off.

Phil

(GPL ain't the only game out there, and the G400 is superb for
everything else...)

Ok, but would GPL work on a Voodoo 2 installed alongside the G400?

yes, good combo.  For gpl get the 2.53 3dfx drivers and place them in
the gpl folder and yer off and running.  Probably best to re-install and
patch gpl as well.

It is possible to run GPL with the G400 in OpenGl-Mode with the latest
drivers from Matrox (V5.52). Performance is ok, with the usual glitches
(Mirror-Setting etc.). There are minor display glitches too, but it works.

Would be much better with a voodoo 2 alongside though, but I'm still
resisting this investment for just one game.

GPL & Matrox G400 any good?

I had a Matrox G400 with a Voodoo 2 alongside and neither worked well for
GPL.  The Voodoo would lock up at times when I was selecting items from the
GPL menu, and the Matrox just simply did not work for me.

I ended up buying a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI and LOVE LOVE LOVE it.  gpl smooth as
