GPL and Matrox G400 ??????

by Peter Prochazk » Wed, 20 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I'm reading RAS regularly (and the Apex forum) and I can't remember one
single post in which somebody said, he got GPL working with the G400. There
were only questions like 'how can I get GPL working with the G400'. So I
suppose, there are a lot of problems with GPL and G400.(can't tell for sure,
since I'm on a V3 3000).
BTW, what do you mean by saying you don't like the 2D perfomance of the V3?
Maybe there are cards with faster 2D, but V3's is definately adequate to
everyday needs.
If you are looking for a card that runs GPL well, I can only recommend a V3
(and it runs everything else well too). GPL is written for 3dfx (Glide) and
any card that doesn't support it natively (and the G400 doesn't, AFAIK) will
cause problems and will run it slower than a Voodoo.

V3?

The G400 has some advantages such as the Dual-Head feature for multiple
monitor/tv support from one card.  With the Marvel version, it has really
good video editing features, etc. V3 3500 does some of that, but not as
much.

Maybe his needs are NOT everyday needs.

No, that is incorrect.  GPL supports, as a retail product, both the Glide
(3dfx) and Rendition cards through rasterizers along with its own software
rasterizer.  Through a beta patch from Papyrus, GPL also supports [to
varying degrees of success] an OpenGL rasterizer thats basically tuned for
the Nvidia TNT [and TNT2 cards it turns out] OpenGL drivers.

Btw, no cards other than those that use the various 3dfx chipsets support
Glide natively.

I think this is for the G200 (?) and won't work with the G400, but I don't
know exactly...

OK, I didn't know about these gadges of the G400, and maybe 'Mad' needs this
stuff. I just wanted to point out that there may be problems with the G400
regarding GPL.

Yep, I know that. But I don't think, that 'Mad' wants to buy a Rendition now
(I don't think that Rendition's 2D is better than a V3's and it's a little
bit outdated). AFAIK, the OpenGL rasterizer for the TNT(2)  (or the TNT
driver ?) has problems with the mirrors in GPL and that reduces your
framerate (in car).
If you want to run GPL problem-free at max framerate and want to have an
up-to-date card, there seems to be no way around a V3 currently.

That's what I thought, now I'm sure. Thanx!

How did he know it worked well since he didn't own it nor did he know frame
rate results?

Marc.
