But anyways, perhaps to the original poster 32bit color, dual monitor/tv
output at the same time, hardware accelerated environmental bump mapping,
image quality, etc may be worth that extra $100 bucks.

And these features are PRESENTLY used extensively by whom? And when they
are ":mainstream" will the G400 still be the hardware of choice? I'm sure
it's a great board but I just don't pay for potential performance, I want it
now bc tomorrow is too uncertain in the computer world and buying for the
future is a waste of money to me. Feel free to disagree.
BTW, my numbers are from combatsim's review, since sims are my hobby these
numbers are most important to me.
WWII Fighters V3 3000-24 FPS G400 MAX-27 FPS
Falcon 4 V3 3000-48 FPS G400 MAX 52 FPS
Wohoo! Let me lay out that $249 for 4-5 FPS! Very cost effective upgrade.
My orig 5% was an estimate based on my recollection of the numbers and I was
a little low, however, my point remains V3 3000 is easily the best bang for
the buck and a year from now neither the V3 3000 nor the G400 MAX will be
state of the art.
Well, image quality is used by everyone. But other than that its a pretty
personal choice of what features to get. I do believe that Rally
Championship will be using environmental bump mapping. Spirit of Speed is
supposed to to, so maybe Gp3 will. Other games outside the realm of racing
are using some of these new features also.
And no, probably the g400 won't be the hardware of choice when they go
"mainstream", but again that is up to the purchaser. All I said was that
the original poster made feel that those features are worth his extra $100
bucks.
Yes, it may be the best bang for the buck for you and for a lot of folks,
but who knows what he's playing or interested in as he didn't say.

Well yes those are what i'll shed an extra $ 100.00 ($ 80.00 to be exact)
for...
I mostly use GPL, Apache-Havoc, EAW and will bta test some incoming Helos
sims that will feature "bump mapping" soon.
What i wanted to know was that since some peoples reported "mirrors"
problems by using a TNT-2, if the G-400 Max was doing the same thing. I am
please by the V3-3000 mind you, but since i bought it not long ago i could
swap it for the Matrox card for a good price.
So if anyone have tried a G-400 Max (or not Max), let us know how it does
within GPL.

C.Giroux.
The mirrors "problem" in GPL is related to OpenGL and NVidia's, as I
understand it, implementation of the OpenGL in their drivers. This may or
may not be present in Matrox's, but last time I looked the OpenGL
performance was a bit lacking with the G400 in comparison to the Nvidia TNT2
product, but improving slowly.

I was wondering if someone tried GPL with a Matrox G-400 Max yet ? I
am
thinking of switching my V3-3000 for one of those...

I would like to know also,
does G400 + GPL = better then Voodoo3 + GPL or not?

soz bout tha speeling.
Most likely not. The Voodoo3 works with GPL and works very well.
450/Herc Thriller to a P3-500/V3-3000 and the difference is amazing. The V3
blows the Thriller out of the water....1024x768 with everything maxed and it
just cruises at 36fps. The high res and detailed mirrors, combined with the
smooth f/r has given this great sim a new lease of life. I obviously knew
i'd get increased performance, but i didn't realise just how dramatic that
improvement would be. And now that i have both rigs linked via 10/100 PCI
ethernet cards, i guess i can now wave goodbye to what remained of my social
life.<g>
Anyway, back to the Ring !
