The problem with GPL in this area isn't that the grass is too slow, it's
too slippery. Just half a rear wheel on it means a *** oversteer
moment. I could live with that but the AI cars have "magic grip" which
allows them to recover miraculously from grass-tracking incidents, and
also "magic steering" which allows the cars to rotate as if pivoting
about their centers.

Isn't that what you should expect from a Formula 1 ?

Oh AI.... it's just so... <1996>   ;-)

I think it is part of the "formula" :-)

Grass _is_ slippery as hell compared to the track, so instant oversteer
with half a rear wheel on it is just what to expect if you are driving
on the limit.

Oh - I agree it is realistic, if I get on the grass it is a problem, but
one of my own making. I found after a while you find yourself making the
opposite lock correction before the graphics even have time to show you
sliding, because you *know* you're going to have to do it.

It's easily done from the***pit view, because the rears are wider than
the fronts.

Try to put both wheels on the grass if you feel that you cannot avoid
putting one of them on there.  This will almost guarantee no spin outs
and not much loss of speed.

As far as the AI goes, they are amazing when it comes to steering off
onto the grass and then back onto the circuit.  They don't even have to
point the car back towards the track and yet it still comes back on in a
sideways kind of motion. ;-)
