GPL: Warez etiquette?

Just wondering If people here want GPL information that has been acquired
from the warez version, or should we just shut up and wait for it to come
out?

I consider the WAREZ version a "Preview" edition.  It may even have been
leaked by a Papy employee...I'm not suggesting that, but who knows?  I
have no m***issues with using this version, as I will be buying the
game the day it arrives in stores...I've had a copy reserved for some
time now.

I have a few questions about this Beta...

* How old is it?  It's version 0.2.0.0.
* I've had a couple of weird things happen in multiplay..where my
steering wheel suddenly goes full left lock..and a couple of times
I've had the equivalent of fuel starvation for 10 seconds or so.
Never saw this in the demo or single player.
* Is Alt-F to be believed?  I have a P2-300 with 4 meg V2200 and
3Dfx Voodoo.  Framerates are *identical* with either card.  FPS
runs 33-36, never in the 20's, even with full field of AI.
* Number of AI on the track seems to make no difference in FPS.  I've
seen mention of having to keep the number of AI down to optimize
performance, but I don't seem to have a problem with max AI.
* Any way of choosing your car number?
* Is it best (like in ICR2) to have tire temps even across the tire?

Personally, I consider it piracy. Yes, while the version there now is
probably a "preview" version, it won't be long before the final release
finds it's way there, and some folks will be clamoring to get their "free"
copy. I would never support this.

I don't know how GPL is coded, but early versions of the game WarBirds
were locked to a maximum frame rate of 33 fps. If you had hardware fast
enough to get 33, no upgrades would make it go faster.

I suspect you're seeing something similar at work here.

nope. gotta disagree here. there is potential for damage in borrowing your
neighbor's car and the car will also experience some wear and tear while
using it that cannot be recovered. a more accurate analogy is sneaking
downstairs at christmastime and peeking at your gifts. it is up to each
individual to decide whether or not sierra/papyrus is going to realize
revenue from GPL. here are the facts: a beta version of GPL is available
RIGHT NOW for the taking. this, unto itself, is not costing sierra/papyrus
any lost dollars. sure, it will after when the full version is made
available for retail purchase.here is how i have rationalized it for
myself:
let's say that your local computer software store has a system set up
featuring a pre-release version of GPL as a form of advertising. everything
is available, but it is not a completely "finished" product. are you
seriously telling me that you would not take a stab at it? you might not -
because i would be in your way until the store closed for the evening!
whether or not you have decided that the version available is good or evil
based upon piracy is nothing more than semantics. in my heart of hearts, i
know that i will buy the complete product when finally made available to me
(as evidenced by the 20-30 product boxes of sierra's stacked in my closet).
so what's is the cost of my actions? is anything or anyone actually wronged
by this? the answer is NO. i have not contributed to the coffers of the
pirates nor have i cost the producers of GPL any lost revenues. i f i was
to purchase a pirated version or simply keep the warez version, THEN, and
only then, would i be guilty of any infraction resulting in lost monies. or
something like that.

...i dunno. i heard that doctorb has called in sick every day this month so
far... ; - )

a piece of birthday cake snuck before it is served is just as good, if not
better, than waiting for it.

The version available at the moment is Beta.
Have no fear....it is *NOT* the final version :o)

I couldn't agree more Don.....
It's ok to say, "But i am going to buy the full release", that's like
stealing the neighbours car and using it untill you go and buy one of
your own!!
How would your neighbour feel?
IMO no other sim racer world wide has waited more for the release of
GPL more than me, and i intend to enjoy the full experience of getting
the software home, opening the box, reading the manual, (for at least 5
seconds), and finally running GPL the way it was meant to be run.
After waiting for GPL to be released as long as i have waited, i don't
want to have the Beta version take the anticipation off the retail
version for me!
While these 'other' versions are being downloaded, i can only think of
the lost enjoyment factor these people will miss out on when the retail
version is released.
Cheers,
Ron

I'm not trying to defend the posters, distributors, or users of
warez.  Just for *me*, this leaked beta equates to a "preview"
release.

I will be buying GPL when it's released...and it's a shame that
some people won't.  And there isn't a damn thing I can do about it.

I thinks that all the complainers out there are doing so because they've
spent most of last week since word first escaped that a 'near-completion'
version of GPL was out and about, and they can't find out where to get it.

Well I'm one Happy-Hippo who has found the site, spent about 3.5 Hours and
$6-00 downloading it, and now powering through Nurburgring goin' arse up at
each corner.

Is it wrong?  Maybe, Maybe not.  Depends on whether you found the site or
not, or so it seems...  Any way like most successful downloaders I have an
order number with Papyrus who will send me my nice finished full product as
soon as it ships.

The version I have is not totally finished, and there are still quite a few
bugs to get rid of, but it'll do for now.

Happy Hunting!
