Video Graphics Card?????

by Richard Mannin » Fri, 27 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Is there one best card to get for the best performance with GP2, ICR2, NC2,
etc....
I currently have a ATI MACH64.  Should I wait for this Rendition Chip I've
heard about?  Will it improve performance in GP2 or just NCR2. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Richard

Unless they recode GP2 for the Rendition chip you will not see much (if
any) improvement.  GP2 seems to be a CPU driven graphic peformer.  If
you go for the Rendition based video card, you will be able to see a
vast improvement from games programmed for that chip (i.e., NASCAR2 and
the recoded ICR2).

Basically, NO!

GP2 is far more dependant on CPU stonk than graphics card.....though a
slow bus speed or clunking sims and the like also delays things
apparently.

Papyrus's graphics model seems more effected by graphics cards it has to
be said.

None of the current "big three/four" have code optimised for any of the
3D cards so there's no advantage there.

A lot of the much-hyped cards have Windoze-specific enhancements that
are useless or detracting from DOS games.

Big-memory cards are essential for high-resolution (eg 1280 x 1024 with
16 million colours) but this is all wasted at game SVGA resolutions and
palletes.

So.....don't look for, or expect, a particular graphics card/chipset to
be _THE_ solution.....it's like Hi-Fi systems or tweaking cars......good
quality components, well balanced to each other is what to aim for.

Cheers!
