NFS:PU: How to run D3D with a Voodoo 3?

by Martin Urs » Sat, 24 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Has anyone with a Voodoo 3 been able to run this game in D3D
mode?  Running the 3d setup program, I only get the option to use
Glide rendering.

I realize running in D3D would give me a performance hit, but
I really can't stand the look of the low-resolution textures!

There are no Voodoo3 drivers for NFSPU, I don't believe, but this
should help -- in the 3dsetup.ini file (in the \3dsetup directory), you
can force the video mode to use the Voodoo2 drivers by changing the
line that states:

   CARD_3Dfx Voodoo3 /M:dx /I

To:

   CARD_3Dfx Voodoo3 /M:voodoo2 /I

This works for Banshee owners, too (I'm using a Banshee card in my
sytesm).

I remember trying this workaround some months ago but, to the
best of my knowledge, the game continued to run in Glide mode.  (How
can I tell?  On my system, at least, a game that runs in D3D is
significantly brighter than one that uses Glide or OpenGL.  For some
reason, the gamma controls under 3dfx Tweaks don't work for me in
Glide nor in GL.  NFSPU remains at the same gamma level regardless of
the change in the .ini file.)

By the way, are you able to run NFSPU with high-res textures?
That is, do the dashboards look the way they do on the box?  Do you
get "damage textures" on your car during the races?

How can I tell if I am running with high res textures?  I have a V5
now, but had a V3 before that.  I was/am getting the "damage textures"
on both cards.
Is there a option for high res texures somewhere?
Thanks,
Andy

Quite simply, if the in-car dials and gauges are blocky and
unreadable (unlike those on the game box) then the textures are low
res.  You should also notice that the shut lines on the cars are very
ill-defined and blurred.

That's odd, though it gives me hope!  You were actually
getting details like broken headlights and scuffed paint during the
race?  I'm only able to see these in the garage mode.

Try fiddling around with the files FE.TXT and FE_OUT.TXT.  Be
forewarned that I've had no luck whatsoever with these.

Oh yes.  The paint gets scuffed up quite a bit, I've also cracked a
windshield.
I don't have the box for the game any more, so I can't use it as a
reference for the dash.  My dash looks ok, but a little blurry.

I'll take a look at them, but I'm positive I'm  seeing the damage
textures.
