NFS:PU - Can't get higher than 800x600 res with Voodoo 2??

by Lou » Sun, 26 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I can't get anything higher than 800 x 600 with my Metabyte Voodoo 2 cards
(SLI). Am I doing something wrong? I have the 3dfx reference drivers (beta
7.0). I can get 1024 x 768 with my TNT card (Canopus).

Don't know about SLI, but with a V3, it gives the option all the way to
1600x1200.

Unfortunately no. But to be honest, I don't find that too much of a
problem, it allready looks superb in 800. Can't have everything...

The reason you get only 800x600 is because NFS5PU
is not recognizing SLI - it's using only 1 of the
cards! Fortunetely there's an easy solution to
this. Edit your registry under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Electronic Arts\Need
For Speed - Porsche Unleashed
and change the "Thrash Driver" from "dx"
to "voodoo2"
Enjoy the higher fps and 1024x768!

SLI doesn't provide double the video memory of a single card.
It just splits the work between the two cards.

2 x 12Mb Voodoo cards is still 12Mb video memory.

I dont know much about editing registry, so I went to the 3DSetup folder, opened
the 3dsetup.ini file and changed the line:
CARD_3Dfx Voodoo2 /M:dx /I

replace "dx" with "voodoo2" to read:
CARD_3Dfx Voodoo2 /M:voodoo2 /I

then run the 3DSetup.exe program again.
The only problem I saw was that some of the menu text are a little blurry and I
dont think "Fraps" frame rate check program will work in Glide.

Um...no it isn't.

The FRAME BUFFER memory is doubled.  It goes from 4 to 8, enabling
1024x768 with zbuffer.  This is common knowledge.  Why do you think
one V2 can't go up to 1024x768?  The z-buffer and framebuffer shares
the same space, so there is only enough framebuffer in 4 megs to get
1024x768 if you turn off Z-buffer.

The available TEXTURE MEMORY is not doubled.  Having 2 V2's still only
gives you 8 megs of texture memory, even though there is 16 megs
there, the texture memory is 'duplicated' i believe...

There may be a hack way to take advantage of the texture memory on the
2nd card, but no one's ever done it...

This may also be the reason why the "24 bit internal rendering" is
*DISABLED* when using SLI mode for 800x600 75 hz+, or 1024x768 ANY
refresh.   Because one card's ramdac has to handle both loads. (see
the dejanews archive for the voodoo2 newsgroup about this problem).
Enabling 24bpp=1 (dont remember the exact environment variable) causes

hz at 1024x768 with 24bpp=1 causes *NO DISPLAY* or a scrambled screen.
This limitation may also have something to do with the texture memory
not being doubled. (again, because of the RAMDAC)

So you were only half wrong :/
