Well, I personally made the stupid mistake of not installing the upgrade
parts I bought. I figured that my car would be upgraded automatically, as I
bought some high tech part. So in the end, I've gotten all these upgrades,
but I still got beat. By chance, I entered the 'Car Setup' menu (didn't
bother before), where I found out that you had to install the parts
manually! After I had installed the parts, I won all the races easily.

Any tips on beating the 944's?

With every new car I buy in Evolution mode, I add at least Pro
shocks/springs/stiff sway bar, then low restriction exhaust, and enough
engine mods to give me a horsepower advantage on the AI.
With the mods you should have a good chance against the AI, the trick is
not to spin out and lose time trying to turn around to get up to speed.
I find that I can usually carry more speed through the corners than the
AI, so just concentrate on driving fast but clean as opposed to very
fast and out of control :-)
Plus those crashes really start costing major $$$ once the cars get in the
$100K range, so unless you drive clean you may not have enough money
left to make car mods after spending most of it on repairs.
Have fun.

Before you buy.
But THE most important thing to remember about driving the 911 is that
it is SEVERELY tail happy, meaning it doesn't take much to make the
tail step out and cause a spin. When you are in a corner be VERY
careful with the gas. Ideally, you should do all of your braking
before you get to the corner so that you can take the entire corner at
full throttle. If you see that the car is understeering (pushing
toward the outside of the corner), let off the gas ever so slightly
until the tail starts to come around, then get back on the gas. You
have to practice with it a lot but once you get the hang of it, there
is nothing more fun. If you let off the gas too abruptly in a corner,
the weight transfers to the front of the car, the rear tires lose
traction, and before you know it you are looking at where you just
came from.
The best car to practice this technique in is the 1978 911 Turbo.
Since it has the most power, the things that I mentioned above are
more exaggerated than in the naturally aspirated 911s. It's kinda like
swinging a heavier bat in the on deck circle -- if you can drive the
911 Turbo effectively, you can drive anything.
Good luck and have fun!
