ive been playing the cpr demo for the last 3 days and ive got my lap times
down to 1:04.52 (a little quicker than Mark Blundells 1:07.22...wawaooo),
and id have to say that for hotlaping the sim is very good.  OK, the AI is
BAAD, but the driving model is realistic (from what ive heard and previous
experience), there is no way id say its the worst sim ever
(ymenard....surely its better than toca 1, 2 or any ea sim (sorrry if youve
already metioned that one))...........The driving phys realy isnt that
bad.........

i own the full version, but ive only just figured out how to get the
steering working as i want, too late as i decimated my cpr disc a while
ago.....only the demo works now (SEE PREVIOUS POSTS)..what can i say....DOH!

pez who should be at Jim Russel when Numb-Thumbs is up and running, and then
FFord with the Touring Cars (TOCA Support) then F3 then F1 wehey! (hey, i
can dream)

Im running ona p200 here with a voodoo 1 and 32megs of RAM and a 400 meg
HD....not a good setup.....granted,the AI in CPR is awfull, but to hotlap it
is good.  I havent tried online racing with it yet (any good?)

GPL is the best sim, then either GP2 or CPR(just for the driving
experience/driving a Champ Car).

1:04.52 in the CPR demo at Laguna Seca (better than Mark Blundells 1:07.22)

It was considered worst because the Als tend to crash to one another, and to
you.  And the big deal about no yellow flag.  And it does not tend to run
too well on most system back then.  People didn't like the game because it
is from Microsoft.  If you look at GPL and CPR, both games require a lot of

People don't have problems with that in GPL but in CPR. <G> I like GPL
because I can run the game at 1027 x 768.  In CPR, you are stuck at 640 x
480.  Another complaint was the damage model in CPR.  That's a bit
unrealistic, comparing to GPL.

Sure CPR rulez, it's the only game I know of that has adjustable mirrors!!
Wouldn't we all want that in all our sims! Especially a Ferarri 312 could
use some.

Seriously, in this game you have to manually edit the carsetup file to get
the brakebalance out of the "legal" range to a drivable 90% rear (IIRC) in
order to prevent the tyres from locking at the merest indication of tapping
the brakepedal. Not only that, the tracks looked pretty dull as well,
especially tracks like Elkhart Lake or Laguna Seca.

So we have dull and unrealistic tracks, no driving-model worth mentioning,
so-so GFX, bad sounds, MS-support, no Internet multiplayer... what have we
got left? A few innovations, like a lot of hype, adjustable mirrors (*Love*
those!!), the engineer that asks you setup-related questions, the turning
head (although I hated it). They could have done lots more with these
original ideas. I'm still waiting for another game to pick up these good
things. (especially the adjustable mirrors :-)

Perhaps it's not the worst game in history, but it's pretty bad
nonetheless.

There was another game, called "Formula One 97", or something like that...
it came with my wheel. I never got it to run... so I guess that's a pretty
bad game!! What about the "Johnny Herbert Racing", or "Prost Grand Prix",
games?

say....DOH!

For online racing CPR was great.  I also met a great group to race with in
CPR, like Steve Eymann, Guy Wilson, David Price and others.  Yes GPL is
better in terms of damage, but man CPR was an absolute blast online are the
Zone.  Yes people do not care for Microsoft and they seem to love Papy.
After buying Nascar Legands and feeling the restirctor plate 426 Hemi I was
not thrilled.

My biggest ciomplaint with CPR was being able to win at 100% AI and lap the
field in a seven lap race<G>
I love Microsoft btw

I think this resumes best the situation that happened with C:PR.  Couple
this with the problems we had on rec.autos.simulators with representative of
the software (eh that was actually a fun period, no?), it gave us a very
bidder mouth I say ;)

Not only that, the tracks looked pretty dull as well,

Have you ever driven Elkhart Lake.  Actaully I have ridden in a M3 there
with a Skip Barber instructor and it looked pretty close.

Lets see the sounds are subjective, but I really thought the sounds were
fantastic.  also there is internet play with CPR.  I said before and will
again, I have raced against a lot of guys who are running GPL now.  Steve
Eymann for one and many others.  heck I would end up spending a Friday
night into the wheee hours of the morning racing CPR at Microsofts Internet
*** Zone.  Sounds to me like you never played the game at all, but you
have listened to everyone slam it.

no Internet multiplayer... what have

I have played it (how else would I know about the mirrors! :-) but
obviously haven't dug deep enough then into the multiplayer capablities. My
recollection failed. I'm glad you corrected my statement.

My favorite bit about CPR and the reason I still play it here and there...
wicked TRACK EDITOR.  I love that thing and have created so many unique
designs.  Only if I could find a big enough of a server to hold all my
creations.

And at the moment the only way to drive the 'Ring in a modern car is with
CPR.  Okay, it's a bit of a stretch, but Arne Martin (hope that's his
correct name) created three looping sections of the 'Ring, since the CPR
track editor can't handle the whole length.  This, in fact is what a lot
of people have asked for in GPL... "would it be possible to edit the 'Ring
to practice just one section over and over".  It's fun, and I am willing
to give CPR a lot of slack for a hotlapping sim, especially with all the
nice 3rd party tracks, and the online play.

Oh, and I actually like the sounds.

I kinda liked it first time round too. I didn't really have the hardware to
run it back then, but I got it on my "To be revisited" list, along with SCGT
and MGPRS2.

CPR did have it's shortcomings though (especially in the AI department).
That being said, if there's any company capable of learning from mistakes
it's Microsoft, so roll on CPR2!! (hey, somebody's gotta make a decent CART
game, might as well be them ;-))

CPR worst game????No way.....

by Greg Cisk » Wed, 01 Mar 2000 04:00:00

After I went to road america last year for the CART race I picked up
CPR and gave it another fresh start. I was running it on a P2-450
with 128MB of ram and a 12MB Voodoo2 card. The #1 thing I
do not like about CPR is the fact that the scenery will still draw
ahead even if you set it to the maximum distance. It is very annoying.
Also the game would crash after I qualified and never let me do a
real race weekend. This is after all the patches and all the advice I
could find here.  Finally the FF was really not bad at all. I could
actually feel bumps in tracks and other stuff.

But as a whole, the game just sucked. And the graphics were
terrible. Even with the so-called 3dfx Glide patch, the game still
looked like ***(identical to Direct3D).

CPR worst game????No way.....

I don't know about unrealistic tracks.  It's a fact that Juan Montoya played
CPR a lot before actually joining the CART series, and he says he learned a
lot about the tracks from the game.  Where was that interview from?  Road &
Track magazine?

bad sounds?  Now I wonder if you really remember what the game was like?
IMO, CPR has the most realistic engine sound of any sim, GPL included.
Totally realistic from what I can hear.

Besides the great sounds, the sense of speed while hot-lapping is fantastic.
It feels like you're doing 200 mph or whatever.  This is the biggest
shortcoming I think of Viper Racing, where at 160 mph, the scenery is barely
moving by you.

The AI does suck bad, but for solo training and hot laps, CPR is quite good
I think.  I have a lot of fun with it anyway.

Although I hated the physics of CPR (bouncing over the track), I'd be
quite
interested in CPR2, as I lost all hope ever seeing a CART sim from
Papyrus...
and I really want a CART sim! (Do I sound desperate? ;^)
