GPL - Losing Sound when racing on-line

by Chris Bloo » Tue, 08 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I tried to have my first on-line race in a long time last night.  I got on
to WinVROC alright and connected to my practice session without too many
problems.  Unfortunatly after a couple of laps I completely lost all sound
and was unable to exit the track.  I had to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to get back to
the desktop and even then I had no sound.  I had to reboot to get my sound
back.  This happened two or three times before I gave up.

This is quite strange as it is something that has never happened in
thousands of hours of off-line racing and last time I raced on-line there
was no problem.  I doubt it is my sound card which is a SB16 and has never
given any problems in four years of use.

Has anyone else had similar problems, or do they have any clues to what it
might be?

Chris

Your soundcard isn't sharing it's IRQ with your modem or game
controller, is it?

Similar thing has happened to me. And every time the reason was that some
other program or utility, like ICQ or Windows Update Notification got focus
in Windows. The situation was cured by a single mouse click or Alt-Tab, but
more than likely resulted in a big crash :)

I suggest you double-check all you online programs ... and close them before
racing GPL online. I did that and never had the problem since.
