GPL On-line Racing

by Phil Le » Thu, 27 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I'm not sure if I'm fast enough to go on-line racing in GPL or whether my
hardware is up to spec?

In 6 weeks, I've got my best lap time for Monza down to 1:30.92 in an Eagle
and 1:31:03 in a Ferrari using the following system:

PII 400, 64Mb RAM
LWFF via USB
CH Pedals via SB Live! 1024
Voodoo 3 2000
Windows 98

I can get a steady 36fps whilst racing and about 25fps at the back of a grid
at the start of a race at 1024x768 with the detail slider at 1/3 maximum and
mirrors set to cars and track.

My modem is a 3Com USR 56K Voice Internal PCI modem (model 2884).  When I
dial on to the internet I normally get a connection speed of 40000 to 42666
bps.

Is this good enough for on-line racing?

I've read on Alison Hine's superb site that Winmodems just don't cut the
mustard when it comes to on-line racing.  I'm not sure whether my modem is a
winmodem.  How can I tell as there is nothing obvious on the packaging?

I don't want to waste my time with on-line racing if my system isn't
suitable, especially as local calls are not free here in England.  Your
comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

Phil

Hi

ive just started online racing myself. My modem is only a 33k. I get some
warping with Nascar 3 but with winvroc and GPl it seemed ok.

have a go its great fun, and not too expensive at the weekend

Yep, it's fine. Just keep in mind that the online connection puts an
extra strain on the CPU. So to keep up the 36 fps and avoid warping to
other drivers, be prepared to sacrifice some graphics and run at a lower
resolution.

It won't look as pretty, but you'll forget all about that instantly once
you're racing humans...

Bye,

If you want to find out what type of modem you have then IIRC this site
will hopefully be of some help.  http://www.modem-help.freeserve.co.uk

Also a question similar to this came up only a couple of weeks ago and I
posted some excellent info by James Pickard on how to setup a 56k modem
for online racing.  If you do a search at www.deja.com for:

First GPL online experience

this was the subject, and hopefully it will give you some pointers.  I
only ever connect at 26400 when online racing and it has worked pretty
well for the last couple of months.

No person's opinions can be said to be
more correct than another's, because each is
the sole judge of his or her own experience.

Thanks for the info.  I looked up the thread and it was very helpful.  I may
well give on-line racing a try tomorrow.

Cheers
