GPL & ACT Lab Shifter?

by b » Thu, 08 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Well, I finally went out and got GPL. All I can say is WOW!!!!!! This is an
incredible sim.

Now on to the newbie question...

Does the ACT Lab shifter work with GPL? I now I can use the up/down mode but
what about all the gears?

Thanks,
Bob

Nope, there's no support for them yet.

"Yet" is probably too hopeful.  I received word from Randy Cassidy a while
back that there would be no future patches to GPL - but then they released
the multiplayer patch...  I guess it is possible, but not probable.

There are many 3d-person add-ons available, can't anybody fix it? Doesn't
seem so hard to do.

Terrible. I guess this is a limitation of game engines
with only up/down controls.

Do I understand this? - to use the shifter I need:
- An ACT labs wheel ( I have a LWFF)
- Compatable Software ( My favorites are GP2, CMR and SCGT)
- $59.99 ( 36 in UK money)

Hmmm. Clearly they aren't marketing this at me - which is a
shame I guess, because I like the idea.

Surely a gearstick shuldn't be so complicated?

Actually, the RS Shifter uses regular button assignments for the gears and
should be easy to program into the game. For 5 speeds plus reverse, you'd
need to reassign 6 buttons. Gear up and gear down are 2, clutch is one,
raise hand is one. That's 4 out the 6 we need. Let's see, there must be a
couple more somewhere. You'd have to give up the stock button assignments,
but it could be done.

I'd PAY to have that RS shifter patch.

Yes - but if I understand you, that still prevents me from
using the shifter "as intended" for a manual shift. (ie. I cannot
change from 5th to 2nd as ACT LAbs would suggest.

(?)

This is because, even if I can do button assignments for the
shifter, the software isn't programmed to respond to
requests for specific gears. Just "up one", "down one".

(As I said, I don't have the shifter, so I cannot test this
out)

That's right, Steven. The game has to be programmed. I was just saying that
the shifter shouldn't be hard to program into any game or retrofit into a
game like GPL by some clever programmer.

I would like to state again that the shifter is fun to use, always, not just
in free shifting mode but also as a regular shifter. That's why I also added
it to the Ferrari and LWFF wheels.  So anyone that's waiting to buy it
because their favorite game doesn't support free shifting, don't wait. You
don't have to use free shifting to enjoy it.
