Act Labs GPL USB Shifter Problems

by BRH » Sat, 03 Nov 2001 10:10:36

I got my GPL USB shifter today, but cannot get it to work.  I've only
tried GPL so far (#1 priority, of course), so I don't have any results
to report in other sims yet.

While the controller is recognized in Windows, and I CAN shift gears
with the shifter in GPL, the car does not move at all when I apply the
throttle.  It's as if a very powerful handbrake is being applied,
because the car shakes, but it never does move.  In fact, at Spa, where
the grid is on a slope, and where I normally have to have the brake
pedal applied at the start or risk disqualification, the car does not
even roll there.

I am using the Act Labs Shifter Utility, and I disabled my LWFF paddle
shifters (which I used for shifting gears previously).  In fact, I also
tried re-activating the LWFF paddle shifters while keeping  the Act Labs
Shifter listed under controllers (see next paragraph) -- Although the
paddle shifters do change gears, the car still does not move.

There must be something obvious that I'm doing wrong, but I can't see
what it is.

I'm running Win98SE, LWFF on Id#1, TSW pedals on ID#2 and Act Labs
Shifter on ID #3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Act Labs GPL USB Shifter Problems

by BRH » Sat, 03 Nov 2001 11:54:01

Here's a bit more info, if it helps:

In Windows Device manager, the shifter is listed as "HID Compliant game
controller" under the Sound, Video and Game Controller section.  Is this
correct?

When I de-activate this device (in device manager), I get full response in
GPL again, but I can only shift thru the LWFF paddle shifters (which makes
sense).  So, anytime that this device is active, I experience the problems
previously stated.  De-activate the device, and everything is back to
normal.

I tried playing around with the ID# assignments under Game Controllers, but
it made no difference.

So, right now, I've got a shifter that installs OK, the system sees it, I
can shift with it, but when it's active, the car doesn't move even though
the engine is revving........

BTW - the problems in N4 are similar, except that the engine won't even
rev.....

Strange.  Once again, all help is appreciated.

Bert,

Since you have a pretty unique set up with wheel on one ID, CH on another
and then the shifter, it sounds like this might be a question to put to Act
Labs tech support.  I've heard they are very good about responding.

Bert
try putting the ActLabs shifter on ID2 and the TSW on ID3 - i have a very
similar setup and it works for me. Also make sure you have set up the
shifter utility correctly (Direct Support, H-Plate, max gear you want to use
etc)
Good Luck

Act Labs GPL USB Shifter Problems

[snip]

Are you using the clutch when starting?

I'm only using the standard paddles, but I have noticed that
sometimes when starting without the clutch (i.e. just slamming
the throttle with gear preselected to start), the car doesn't
move at all. Seems like the GPL builtin torque converter that
is supposed to make it possible to start without the clutch
isn't always working.

Tim,

YOU ARE THE MAN!  I put the shifter on ID#2, with the TSW peds on ID#3, and I'm
back in business in GPL.  .........and the paddle shifters even still work, as
well.  I haven't tried other sims yet (had troubles with N4, as well), but I
assume this set-up will work there too.

Once again, a big thank you from a fellow MARA-ian!
