ACT Labs wheel/USB problems

by evente.. » Tue, 02 May 2000 04:00:00

Just got my ACT Labs wheel last Friday, and I must say I'm very
impressed with it - built like a tank!
The problem I'm having is that the damn thing won't stay active for more
than a few minutes if I try to connect through USB.  If I clean up
everything and get it to re-detect the wheel, after a short while it
will show "not connected" in control panel, and even though my PC
detects the USB disconnect/connect cycles, all it ever shows up as is
"Unknown device" under USB devices.  If I try to manually load the
driver for this unknown device, it says "the specified location does
not contain information about your hardware."  It's plugged directly
into the motherboard USB ports (either one makes no difference).  My
Gravis gamepad works just fine as a USB device.  Problem still exists
when the wheel is the only USB device.
I did have a little better luck as a serial device, but still had one
moment where it didn't seem connected.  I was away all weekend, so I'll
do some more long-term testing tonight.
Here's my hardware:

Abit BH6 rev1.0 with latest BIOS
SB-Live
V3-2000
Avermedia TV98
Win98
DX7.0a
3COM 3C905 NIC.

The one thing I do note is that because of a limitation of the Abit MB,
the TV card and the USB port share the same IRQ (5).  Any card in this
particular slot will use the same IRQ as USB, from what I understand.
Does anyone know if the ACT Labs wheel has a particular problem sharing
IRQ's when it's a USB device?  Are you out there, Raymond?

Thanks for any advice - I'd like to rip my PC open only if I know it'll
fix the problem.

Try to remove all instances of the Force RS from the Device Manager
and then re-plug in the USB jack.  The Force RS should only show up
once under sound and game controllers.

I would try their tech support line first though.   They are awesome
